Was thinking of getting one. Is this the latest version or maybe an older model?

That looks like the newer version 2.

I’ve been looking for something like this recently so this will really tempt me.

    Thanks op.

The nest doesn't need a sim card -it works via WiFi.

We got the Hive recently from Bord Gais and love it so far. Just have the heating, no other gadgets yet!

But we got it free from Bord Gais so its probably worth ringing them to see. If you're not in contract and tell them you're going to leave they'll offer it free (one zone) and install free. And I see on their website that if you're not with them you can switch and get it free. You do have to commit to a 2 year contract but it only costs €30 to end the contract before the 2 years if you need to.

It is a pity Hive don't have smart TRV's, Like Tado, Netatmo, EvoHome have. It is the one thing they are badly missing for a complete system.

I've been with Bord Gais for years now. I had been thinking I need to see what else was out there, despite the fact I don't really have anything to complain about. I might just chance my arm and try this.

Thanks Silly socks, Apart from controlling the gas boiler for instance in summer can it run the upstairs electric immersion also or is that a seperate entity alltogether. Also i read its battery powered? Or can you replace your existing hard wired old thermostat and use that cabling

When I select the no install option it says 159, but when add to the cart its showing up as 199?

PS: Is it just me or is there very little info on their website wrt actual installation requirements. I'm coming from a 2 zone setup:

    1) CH battery operated RF thermostat/timer which communicates with a receiver controller
    2) HW thermostat on side of tank, hard wired to a HW RF timer which communicates with a receiver controller
    3) RF Receiver controller opens/closes motorised values which once opened switches a fuseboard relay to send power to the boiler.

Does the hive add much to the above other than the remote app stuff? Also I dont think hive controls HW via temp, ie just on/off?

    Thanks
    W.

Sorry my mistake. I was confusing it with Climote. The other smart device Bord Gais are pushing. I’ve edited my original post.

I didn't complain either, I just said we'd other companies knocking on the door wanting to change and what could they offer. They first offered 150 eur of bill but when I asked about Hive they said I could have that free instead.

You only get the one zone one free but that's all we needed-multiple zones cost extra, I think 150/170 ish per zone. And maybe that's how you control the electric immersion but we didn't bother with that because we've a timer on it for summer anyway.

The best thing we find now is having the thermostat as we didn't have one before and it was hard to regulate the temp in the house from being too hot/too cold.

+ to say im a bord gais customer and got it for free. Its very good, but i wouldnt pay full price for it.
I have a theory that its actually costing me more as in my bills are higher, because its so easy to put on when your not there 'ah sure ill put it on now to have the house nice and toasty', whereas if you didnt have that access, you go home and throw a hoody on and suck it up :-)

Can you not heat your water through your gas? Thats what i do, so i never put the immersion on any more.

What happens with the app etc. when you finish your contract or move to another provider?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,719 ✭✭✭cronos

Anyone got anything like this via Energia?

Its yours for life, not just the two year contract. Even if you break the contract, i.e you have to move house or something, they dont ask for the unit back (sure it would be useless to them anyway)

It depends if your hot water tank is hooked up to your gas heating or not and how it is set up.

And modern systems (combi boilers) don't even have a hot water tanks (they may have a small inbuilt one, but you wouldn't know it in the traditional sense).

Yeah i understand, i meant more asking the poster if they had the ability to do. My motorised valve was gone when BG guy called, so i was using the immersion (house is about 8 years old), and he told me i was mental, it was so much more expensive using the immersion when i could use the gas to heat it. I swiftly went out and bout the new value to fix the issue :-)

They can heat on demand enough for a bath. I didn't know that. Any place I've seen them fitted there is already a HWC.

Combi boiler? Yes, I've one for years, it is fantastic, almost instant hot water (takes about 30 seconds to flow through) with no need to fiddle about with HW tanks. More then enough to easily fill a bath, we do so every night.

Note mine has a small water tank built into the boiler for efficiency, not that you would know unless you looked at the manual, it is all in one unit.

It is pretty much the norm in continental Europe and becoming the norm for new installs in the UK. The immersion tank thing is pretty uniquely Irish.

I'm not a plumber though, I think many homes in Ireland might need a water pump to use them due to low water pressure from the mains, but certainly worth looking into if ever getting a new system installed.

Yes, I think you are right. My place is an apartment and I think it has a big shared pump in the basement, great, very strong water pressure. Though I think any home can install a pump + combi boiler rather then the traditional hot water tank.

The advantage is instant hot water at any time in an efficient manner (you only heat what you use, when you use it) and saves space in your house (no water tanks in hot press, attic, etc.).

Disadvantage is, if your heating goes, then no backup for hot water (immersion).

Having experienced it, it makes life so much nicer IME. Also mixer tapes, so much nicer then stupid separate hot and cold water tanks.
