The annoying SuperValu insurance ad on radio1. It starts with her saying I think we should break up in an authoritative voice. On hearing this her grovelling spluttering partner comes on and she swiftly rebukes him with a slapping down tone in her voice saying 'with our carrrrrr'(as if to say you fcekin ejit). So it was all a misunderstanding on his part. On hearing this reprieve he n acts all quivering like he's dodged the breakup bullet and starts expressing his love for her still with a grovelling voice
Would this ad be allowed to air if the roles were reversed?. How weird would this sound if the roles were reversed!?.

Fwiw he probably did need to be dumped by the sounds of him!

    Exactly.

Perhaps it's a subtle satirical social commentry on the inequality in our family law system where, if one reads the available research on judicial separation and divorce, the vast majority of applications are by women and in the vast majority of cases men lose the most.

100% nothing wrong with that ad

I’m off to the bookies with €20 on a white Christmas. Surely a guarantee at this point!

As a male I'm highly offended by this add.

Oh wait a minute no I'm not it's just another add.

This is outrages, let me put on my whinging pants and agree with you. While we are at it, lets complain that theres now 2 women set to anchor the 6 oclock news, what else that is normal that we can possibly look at to be sexist.

Cop on, its an add trying to have a bit of humour.
Trying being key word there, I hate them adds, but just because its dry humour, but thats a whole different story

If this was the only ad portraying men this way that would be one thing, but it seems to be the closer to the norm rather than the exception these days.

Is there a bigger collection of butt hurt people anywhere else than on the radio forum, across all threads, when it comes to looking to be offended on behalf of the men of Ireland?

Original Question: Would it be sexist if the roles were reversed?

Answer: Yes. Because the ad in it's current form is a mild form of sexism, in that it plays into gender stereotypes. Using the "sad-sack" male trope of the male being so delighted to find a female willing to be in a relationship with him.

Is it a problem? Probably. It assigns traditional gender roles and relies on the listener accepting these preconceived notions of relationship dynamics. The producers of the ad know that if the roles were reversed the interplay would sound far more sinister because of the traditional focus of male-on-female domestic abuse as opposed to female-on-male domestic abuse which is often ridiculed.

Should we be overly angry about it? Not really IMO. An interesting academic example of societal attitudes, but at the end of the day, it's ultimately harmless. Maybe one day we'll live in a world where the genders could be reversed in the advert and it wouldn't sound sinister, or maybe one day the majority of people will look back and think "Oh, that probably wasn't appropriate in hindsight.", but tbh getting overly worked up over it is typical MRA bullsh*t.

It is mildly sexist and does form part of the advertising trope of men being gormless sad sacks.

Just as you'll see every ad for nappies, detergent and vaccum cleaners featuring women.

Its only sexist if its not true...some modern men are soft eejits...if youre offended by the ad then youre one....

Which, in itself, is sexist, because it assumes men should be dominant and not show subservience to women and should be "hard".

Read what you want into it...I don't find the ad sexist, but then I have a sense of humour which seems to be the difference here...:)

Oh I have no problem with the ad, read my original post in the thread. From an academic point of view, it is sexism because it relies on gender stereotypes. But it's an amusing ad nonetheless IMO.
