Just got started on digging a pond at the end of the garden and was doing some reading to see where was best to go for pond liner. I'm based in north Cork. I see all the threads here on boards are a few years old so I thought it would be best to see if I can get some up to date advice. Not even sure what material to get or what size to make the pond. Thanks in advance for any tips.

Got about 4metres x 4metres started now and reckon I should go a bit deeper anyhow. Starting to hit a line of bedrock at one spot so might not be able to go as deep as I was hoping. You might notice the site for the pond does have a slope on it which I realise does complicate things. This pond might be part one of a two pond system with the higher pond overflowing into the lower one I''m starting on now. On part time hours from work for the next while anyhow so may as well make a start while I have the free time. Has anyone used a particular type of liner that has proved long lasting?

Had posted pictures but they have disappeared and the edit post option is also not available to me anymore. Not sure why this is but apologies for my post not fully making sense as a result. Now potential pond is 4.2metres x 4.7metres and only 0.5metre deep at the lowest point. I have read it's better to go deeper for keeping fish but I'm more interested in encouraging some frogs to keep some control of slugs in the garden so just wondering if anyone knows if it still should be deeper when I have no intention of keeping any fish? There's a local heron who would make a meal of any fish I tried to keep anyway so no point in buying in fish to feed it.

You should figure out where you're going to get your liner before you make it any bigger.

B&Q sell Hozelock liners. I got a 5x4m one for a 3x2m pond that is 50cm deep. That one was around 80euro and I think it was the biggest they had. Don't know where you'd get one for a 5x4m pond. Maybe a good garden centre?

Amazon have lots of polythene pond liner materials and joiners, tape, under pond liners etc for a lot less than the likes of b and q

my pond is just less than 4m across at its longest dimension, and is about 60 or 65cm deep at the deepest - the chap who runs pond hobby (north county dublin) reckoned PVC would do just fine, and it has so far.
ours is deeper than my father-in-law's pond - i'd guess his is between 40 and 50cm deep, but a much larger surface area, and even that didn't completely freeze during the bad winter from seven years ago; when it melted, his carp were still alive (until he topped the pond up with tapwater).
