Preventing Someone Legally From Contacting You

Bit of a shot in the dark, with as little background as possible here.

Is there legally any avenue that can be taken to force a person to disengage from any form of contact with you? The person has not been physically violent but have been asked, begged and now ordered by us to leave us alone. They show up unannounced at our house, send letters, cards, presents etc. This person caused a great deal of emotional hurt and we essentially want to know if they can be forced to desist by law. Not looking any advice on the subject, just if there is, legally, an avenue for something like that.
