you'd need her tag number in order to check it on the ICBF search

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,129 ✭✭✭✭patsy_mccabe

The owner of the heifer also has to be in either HerdPLus or the BDGP (Genomics Scheme).

Looking at a purebred Angus cow at the mo but yet man hasn't gotten stars, not in schemes. Any way around this?

Maybe he knows well what her eurostar figures are which are crap and he doesnt want you to know them.
Have you tried putting her tag number into the search on icbf.com?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,006 ✭✭✭tellmeabit

Yep no joy. Her calf from last year has stars. It's a bull, does the search show for females? I'll ring icbf this afternoon and see what they say. Thanks

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,316 ✭✭✭tanko

The search shows stars for females if their owner is in herdplus or the genomics scheme.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,006 ✭✭✭tellmeabit

He is neither. Was hoping that being pbr that they may be some way to see.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,006 ✭✭✭tellmeabit

Just notice that herdplus are doing a months free trial. Might as him to sign up to it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 962 ✭✭✭john mayo 10

Whats to be gained by signing up to herdplus? Can't we already check star ratings of animals outside or inside our herds on the icbf website

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,212 ✭✭✭wiggy123

    no you cannot

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,212 ✭✭✭wiggy123

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,006 ✭✭✭tellmeabit

If you want to pm me the number and I can try check through my herd plus account.

I don't think it matters if you are in herdplus. The herd owner of animal needs to be in it. I was going to set him up for the months trial but not certain it will show the stars. Will try it nothing to be lost

    I wondered that before,
If the animal was worth a few grand and you wanted to be sure, couldn’t you register him and check the stars, kind of like a cartell for cows.

The months free trial is for herdwatch not herdplus.

But If you were buying a number of heifers or a pbr cow that you wanted, I reckon it’d be worth the €60

I know there is no guarantee there is data though

Bit of a ****e when your in herdplus and you can't check females you want to buy. They'll have to change that.

You said you have her brothers tag. Can you co into him and check his sire and dam add their values and divide by two should give you a rough guide?

As said above the aa society should be able to help you out.

What I've often done also is check similar breeding on the herd database. It should be close enough to gave you an idea of the stars.

For example, if the cow was by Bull A and the bull was sired by Bull B, I'd search for similar animals with that breeding.

Try checking her in the online herdbook from the Angus society, if she is pbr she has to have a rating,, surely ?

Just checked meself it seems its just ebv's on the angus site,, uk style rating

One question have you seen the cow and do ypu like her...if answer is yes the stars should be a side issue...i have culled 5 stars because they are ****e and i have 1 stars doing a great job in my angus herd. I could sell you 5 stars cows ...but trust me you would never walk into my yard again as i would be conning you if i sold them..hence off to the factory is my solution for ****e
The society unlikely to help on stars. Couple of option get the guy selling to contact icbf as it's his data so to check stars. Another option is ask owner name of sire of cow ..you can check sire if his stars are OK or not..if the sire is high in stars chances are she is ok also.

When searching icbf for bulls is there a way to filter bulls so I can search for milk? Say I want to see the top bulls for milk?

Ya download the excel file, add table, sort for milk. You can also filter out the low reliability values. I could do it for you, if you like. Which breed?

Patsy, I'm snowed under at work with the last month, could I delegate a few jobs to you over boards.ie? Be much appreciated!!

Thats because there isnt one there for milk, like Patsy says you have to download the excel file and look there. Dont ask me how you do it tho.

Patsy, can you do it for Sims and lims??
