New car - Octavia / Ceed

Looking at a new car, the main things are comfort and not too expensive to run, but also able to fit a childs pram into the boot! Down to three options:

    1. 2016 Kia Cee'd Diesel, the 134BHP version. Has cruise control.
    2. 2015 Kia Cee'd Petrol, the 98BHP version. No cruise control (I think - trying to confirm)
    3. 2016 Skoda Octavia, 110bhp version. No CC.

Currently I drive an 08 Focus, 109bhp. We only do ~10k miles per year (though it'll probably rise a bit next year). That said, a lot of our journeys are long ones as our families both live 2 hours away. I fancy having cruise control but not a deal breaker if not there if the car is otherwise worth it.

For our driving, the petrol is probably the best fit but I am concerned it will feel underpowered and piss me off when driving it. #1 is the best spec'd car of the lot.

The Skoda is alright, but the Kia warranty is very attractive and while it does have a bigger boot I don't think they look as nice.

Anyone have any thoughts on these cars?

My father had one of the 128bhp ceeds - gearing makes it feel slower than you'd think with the figures. He hated it in the end and sold it. I had an octy at the same time and that was much more comfortable to travel in and proved more reliable too. Easier to load up gear into too.

Rented one of those petrol ceeds last week on holidays. I really wouldn't bother with it if you want something that doesn't feel underpowered.

The Octavia while having super economy for mpg I find very sluggish with 110bhp.

Best advice is drive them all for as long as you can on the sort of journeys you make most

The 1.6 TDI has a bit of an iffy reputation, compare that with the Ceed which has 5-6 years warranty left, and they're two completely different ownership propositions.

Yes, TDI would be VW stuff. The Kia is CRDI. Marketing!

Skoda is pretty much off the list at this point so.

Choice now is between the 1.4 Petrol and the 1.6 Diesel Ceed. I would go for the Diesel all day long as it has almost 35hp more and is a 2016 with only 3000 miles on it, but the petrol one is 5 grand cheaper (2015 with 30k).

Still, I think the potential for frustration with a 1.4 that feels a bit sluggish will tip me to the Diesel. Drove a 1.4 petrol Toyota on holidays earlier in the year and it felt unresponsive compared to what I'm used to, and all I have is a 1.6 focus so not at all a rocket.

I think later petrol Ceeds tend to be the basic spec unless it's from the UK ?

All of them are from the UK.

The Skoda has apple carplay and the Kia's don't though. Decisions are tough! :D

Good stuff. From a dealer here or is it still abroad? That 1.6 CRDI engine rarely gives DPF issues so you’ll orobably be fine.

    From NI.

161 with 3000 miles on it, almost brand new. Just have to wait for my VRT export appointment in November before switching over.

Just make sure you have 6000km on t when you go to register it or VAT will be chargeable.

    Huh?

Is this VAT on top of the VRT amount the online calculator gives me?

I put in the 3000 miles and it says I'll pay ~ €2500.

Fcuk sake, just looked it up, I'll have to pay like 21% of the OMSP which is like another 4 grand.

It's 900km short, guess I'll be doing a good few spins and making the most of that 30 day registration limit!

Just make sure it is on c. 4k miles when you bring to NCT centre.

    I think that's 3 days...not 30!

It's 3 days to put the new plates on once you've already paid the VRT and got your reg number.

When you bring the car in you have 7 days to make an appointment and 30 days to complete the process.

Thanks for raising this point, I'd have been rocking up to the NCT centre and having a heart attack otherwise. :)

If you are not collecting cars for a bit some dealers will run up miles for you.
