Revenue doesn't require original of v5c. Copy is enough as proof or registration abroad.
Question is if dealer is going to give you copy of this, as there is no obligation like that on him. You could make it as part of trade in contract though.

Process is not overly complicated. Vrt export inspection is just half an hour and coats 38 quid.
They once you have copy of v5c you just fill up one form and sent it to revenue with that v5c copy.
If car was not registered abroad within 30 days of export inspection, then you will also need proof that car left the state within that 30 days. Ferry ticket is enough, but I'm not sure what in case of exporting to NI...

Timewise, after sending form and copy of V5c you will probably get a refund within about 2 months.

I went through that process early this year.
