My (personal) experience has been very negative with The AA. I’ve since cancelled my membership.

    Any alternatives / recommendations?

    Thank you !

Most insurance companies bolt on roadside assistance now.

But that's only if they'll give you comprehensive cover.

But that's only if they'll give you comprehensive cover.

Last couple of times I've renewed for myself and parents it's been a cost option, but only ever do comprehensive as 3rd party is usually so close as to make it not worth while or occasionally more expensive than comp.

Yeah, but some insurers will only do third party if the car falls under a certain value. So regardless of the price, it's down to what's offered also.

Never value a car below €4k ;) They'll only pay book value but as you said they might only offer 3rd party for low value cars and even if you get comp the premium will be more.

Thanks, yeah I realised this recently, it seems that my policy does not have that added feature. I have asked them (AXA) to quote me to add same on and I'll see what it comes out at.

I am fully comp. Agree with others here that FullyComp is the only way to go, especially when there is so little in the cost-difference these days. Unless maybe for first-time drivers whereby Third Party might be substantially cheaper.

Anyway, OP I'm a member of the ADAC. It's straight forward enough to join, just phone them and ask for somebody who can speak english. It gives me full European breakdown assistance as well as a basic travel insurance.

However, if you don't need the European breakdown, it's probably cheaper to go with the fully comp insurance addon.

A minor advantage to AA, if you are insured with them, is they cover you, not exclusively your car. Hence if I'm in someone else's car (And I don't have to be driving) and it breaks down, my insurance covers the breakdown.

My experience with them was very positive and I've only needed them once thanks to a flat in a DAA multistory car park at 2am. Couldn't have been nicer.

I use ADAC as well, and can highly recommend them. Very comprehensive European Cover for 84 Euro a year or a Family Package covering a Family and multiple Cars (in any combination) for 109 Euro a year. Also comes with quite a few Insurance details included that I haven't see any UK or Irish companies provide.

They have a huge Network throughout the World, and you will never have any trouble getting them out, no matter where you are.
