Moved home with Debt in UK

Hello, I have just returned to Ireland after some years abroad. Parents are both ill and needed someone to come home.

Problem is I was teaching in the UK and while there I ran up a debt that I was paying off. Total debt is 6k GBP. Now on my salary in the UK that was manageable and I made the payments, the debt was at 10k at one point.

I went further abroad last year to travel and teach, I was going to return to UK and never updated my address but instead I came straight home. While travelling I also made payments.

Now I am back and on the dole while I wait to register with teaching council. I only have one subject here so I may ever be fully employable in teaching but I am taking an IT course part time to boost employment. In a few months, I will be fully employable again but in the mean time I haven't a penny.

Now, this is the first month I haven't a hope of making the payment and so it will continue for now. I would honor the debt in future but it is not possible now.

Considering my parent's health both Parkinson sufferers there is no way I will be going back UK. The bank only have my email address. Should I contact them and explain? Will the fact I didn't tell them I have moved be an issue? Will they be able to chase the debt in Ireland? Will it affect my CR here? If anyone as any advice for any of these questions that would be great.

    Thanks

Be aware that there are time limits for the enforcements of debts and judgments.

Also be aware that acknowledgement of debts can extend the deadlines for the enforcement of the debts.

That's all that that I am going to say, to avoid breach of the rule against legal advice.

The bank also has your NI number and can register a debt against you using this and your last known address. Given that employment may not be guaranteed here and there may be a possibility that you may during your lifetime return to the UK, a judgement by a financial institution against you be disastrous for your credit rating. Think long term, can you borrow the money off a family member?

    Thanks for the replies.

I can't borrow any money at moment as we need to keep what we have while parents sort out pensions etc.

They don't have my NI number as I initially set up a Student account and got paid into it after. Would they still have access to it.

I am going to make payments when I can and see what happens in the meantime when I can't. That is literally all I can do.

Ignore it and live your life.

    Never engage with them
