Is it possible to train a dog to use a tray or poop corner when indoors, but still ask to go outside when people are present.

Actually, I know its possible, I know of one dog who does it, but the owner cant think of anything special they did.

When they are there, the dog will look to get out the back garden to go to the toilet, but when alone, they use a tray in the corner of the room.

It sounds like it would be difficult to train them this without confusing the baejesus out of them.

Very confusing for the dog to be honest, so i wouldn't encourage it. Try to keep it one or the other.

and frankly, why would you? he /she shouldn't be left alone so long that they have to do their business inside

6 hours or there abouts while people are at work.
this isnt a debate about dogs being left inside on their own for extended periods.

I know more than a few dogs with people at home all day who are treated very poorly, being tied up in the garden or a shed all day every day, and vice versa, i know more than a few in families who work 6-8 hours and still get 2 hours of walking and exercise each day. Its down to the person that suits the dog and a dog that suits the person. if the dog is a big dog that requires a lot of exercise then it shouldn't be in all day, but if its an older dog with less energy, its a different set of circumstances.

Ive seen enough cases on each side of this and my mind wont be changed.

I think with your friend, it probably wasn't a case of training them where to go and more so that the dog just happens to go in the same place each time. Its very rare that my dogs have an accident in the house but when they do, its always in the same place (if its my collie, its in the kitchen by the door, if its my terrier, its under the table in the sitting room).

I think it would be too confusing for the dog to even try it if im honest. It will most likely end with the dog doing its business in the house when owners are there and possibly worse, doing its business in other peoples houses if you bring the dog out.

I leave my dogs alone while I work everyday and a good walk before I go eliminates any accidents during the day so there should be no need to train them to go inside in my opinion.

than you will either have to put up with the occasional accidents ion the house or get someone to let him/her out once during the day...

Thats no worries, just wanted to check with more seasoned experts, lased on seeing that other dog that just took to going in a particular corner indoors if nobody is about.

    nothing ventured, nothing gained

I would not expect accidents from 6 hours a day. Dogs in overnight often go longer then that with no problems

In fairness, I'd say there's a couple of thousand dogs a year that are put down that would settle for that If it was the alternative.

By the door where it goes out for exercise or to the toilet normally would be a good bet, but it'd probably be more luck than judgement getting it in whatever tray you'd be using. Putting down puppy training square pads might be more feasible.

Oh well, give me an easy life and a peaceful death.

Our dog normally goes outside but when I'm at work, I leave a mat in corner where we started off training initially. She only ever goes there if she has an accident but goes outside the rest of the time.

If our dog has accidents in the house it is unusually on the mat at the door. TBH 6 hours shouldn't be a problem.
