Strong smell from ensuite shower drain

    Hi

We have a horrible smell coming from the ensuite shower plughole (I think) It's been an ongoing problem for years, but today, it's worse than ever. We had a leak on the shower wall running behind the tiles and into the sitting room and had it repaired and re-tiled a few years ago. To be honest, I think the whole shower unit should be taken out and looked at again. I don't think the problem was fixed, just patched up. Currently, there's a sheet of plastic taped onto the tiling to stop water going into the sitting room.

    Advice welcome

Just had our en suite redone and prior to that we always had a smell. Turns out the shower was never tanked behind the tiles so the water got in and rotted the plasterboard and timbers behind it creating the smell. If you need a plastic sheet to stop the water hitting the tiles and running down to the sitting room my guess is that you're looking at something similar.

    Similar like mine !??
Stripped down to the bare timber and replaced al the cheap dirty work done by some developers and theirs jacks.
Done with proper insullation, new timbe subflooring, covered whole halfsize room with cement boards, water resistant plasterboard and... proper plumbing !

Thanks for your reply and posting photos. I can imagine ours would look just the same if we were to strip it back too. Did you do the work yourself?

If you go to the trouble of ripping it all out you should get it tanked. Lifetime job.it'll never leak again

    Yes, done that too.
However, the kit that they gave me wasn't enough , as the tape is too short in length to cover all the corners and joints for the cement boards. Bought two kits only for the tape, sealant was plenty of it left over.

Yes, DIY job as my wife took out a single tile after drops "dropping" on the kitchen table...from there was only madness, fury and terminator style in taking the tiles and floor/subfloor. Finishing touch, i had to call a plaster/painter to do the kitchen ceiling.
Also, i was initially hoping to do only the bottom half of the bath.. however, the tiles and the style of the current ones weren't available anywhere in any shops so I fcuking end up stripping down whole bathroom tiles and replace them...with help from a tiller friend.

Do it once, do it properly but keep in your mind, somehow the water will find its way down, due to gravity...
