ADSL won't work after power cut

My folks have Vodafone ADSL and recently they turned off the power in the house for an hour to allow for fitting new electrical sockets.

After the power was turned on the VF modem started making a clicking sound and would never turn on.

They got a replacement modem from Vodafone the following day, but there appears to be something wrong on the line that is preventing it from connecting.

Any idea what they could try or do they need to contact Eir about resetting the line or similar?

    Contact Vodafone?

    Contact Vodafone?

They did that (in order to get the replacement modem) but predictably they are little help.

My recommendation was to call Eir, but how the hell would a phone line be affected by a power cut??

Eir won't help as you have no contract with them, log a call with Vodafone

    Don't Eir maintain the infrastructure?

    This isnt a coincidence.

    There are two options here:
    A) Very old modem fails upon reboot due to bad cap or possibly a firmware flash failing. Typically happens with really old netopias and the like. - RULED OUT
    B) Your sparks have made a mess and put 240v AC onto the 48v DC line and made a total mess.

Call the sparks back to clean up.

    They own the lines.
But your service is supplied by Vodafone, therefore you will need to log a ticket with them.

If there is a fault on the line they will then log it with Eir.
Eir won't deal with you unless you have a service with them.

What 48V DC line would one expect to see in a normal household?

    Oh heck!
I cannot imagine how someone could put 240V ac on to a phone line ...... but now I realise you have even less faith in some of those 'sparks' than I do :D

The MTAU specifically tests and alarms for it as techs in the early days received nasty surprises.
