I have a 2009 zetec Mondeo 1.8 tdci which has done 87000 miles and find the engine noisy when in 1st and second gear while taking off. feels like the timing is out or something. just passed an mot though. i was told it had a timing chain on the 2009 in place of a wet belt but not sure. The car runs great on a good road in the top gears.

Anyone have or had the same issues? anyone have any answers?

It has the wet belt. It's pre 2008 that have the chain in general, anything built after some date in October 07 have the belt.

What kind of noise are we talking about??.. is the car jumpy/any change in performance matching the noise?
    Marty.

It just sounds like a rough diesel thats reving too low and yes it is a bit jumpy in 1st and second unless you put your foot down. I dont know maybe Ford diesels are noisier than Toyotas which is what i had. Im not great with cars either and this has 6 gears so maybe it needs to be driven different. i just got it a week ago and drove down from belfast no problems. I wish i could record the sound and put it on here. The guy i bought it from seemed genuine enough and told me it had a chain. weather he had it changed to a chain or not i dont know. Makes me wonder now if the belt broke and he had it changed. Maybe im just paranoid as well lol

Is the noise only when you drive... if your stopped up and slowly bring the engine up through the revs is it lumpy?
Any rattling out if it when you start it...

That sounds suspiciously low mileage for an 09 mondeo, did it come with service history that backs it up?

yes had a good service history. it was a motorbility car. only did21000 in first 3 yrs 44500 by 2014 last service 84000 28/04/17. Sitting in Neutral turning on sounds ok. going up the revs ok till about 4000 the gets a bit lumpy allright. but generaly ok while at stanstill. Did notice that its generaly ok when pulling away in morning untill the car warms up then if i have stopped and then restart a journey the 1st and second gear pull away gets noisy again.

You did well to get one with so few miles.
They do sound a little agricultural TBF but if it's hesitant which I think you are saying it is then it could be a few things. It doesn't sound like dmf which is good for you as it's expensive.
It's really hard from your description to discipher if it's transmission or engine related.
Does it absolutely only happen in 1st & 2nd?
    Marty.

well if there are low revs throughout the gears it would do it but not realy. isaw a post abot the same car missing and it was one of the injectors failing. this car was sat idle for about 5 months so is it possible that they or it may have got a bit sticky? im going to put a fuel and ijector cleaner into the dieseland see. its a mix i used with my avensis which was very good. if that doesnt work i guess il get the ford dealership to put it on the computer.

    Yeah its definatly miss fireing.
I guess that could be the injection or the timeing is out. Im no mechanic so i cant think what else it could be but im sure theres probably a few more reasons it could happen. i have put the cleaner in and il see if that makes a difference. if not a trip to Ford dealership.
Just want to thank you for your time, its been good to talk to someone who obviously knows more than i do which woukdnt be hard.
Other than that the car is Quality. As with all the other Mondeos i have had it goes where you point it and its responsive. Il stick to the petrol engines in Mondeos in future though lol
    Thanks again
    Gary

That diesel is a great engine.
You really need to find out if your wet belt was done and if not you need to be scheduling it soon.
Is the diesel fresh in it??.. you said it was laid up for a few months.
EGR could be blocked/valve not reseating... you can blank the EGR on that car.
If it's misfiring could well be an injector or even a loose connection to an injector, worth wiggling the connection points from harness to injectors.

Anyway you've a few things to try, a lazy turbo actuator would give similar hesitancy that could feel like misfiring too.

Find a good indie mechanic locally and you'll have it sorted for v little.
    Marty.
