contractor reference dilemma

    Ok here's the scenario.

I've been contracting for a good few years and references have never been an issue - come to end of agreed contract, line up a new one and previous company never an issue with a reference. I've never broken a contract term.

I'm now a year into this contract ad they've asked me to renew for another 6 months from 27th November. However, I've been interviewing for a permanent role and I believe its down to two of us. The company have said that there's nothing between us and asked if they could take a reference from current employer.

Whilst I've absolutely no issue in providing details, this new role is still 50/50 by the sounds of it and its one hell of a risk alerting my current employer with a contract renewal looming. I was thinking of offering one from my previous company whom I was with for 3 years, but that would be a year old.

Never faced one like this before & I really really want the role.

Your new perspective employer should understand this perfectly well and should have no issue in taking a reference from an employer who you worked together with for three years.

I would never expect a reference from the active current employer, and as long as it is still relatively recent (which a year would be) then I see no issue with that.
