€300 Mouth Guard from Dentist V €30 mouth Guard from Boots

Hi ,

I had a recent check up at the Dentists where he discovered that as i had suspected I am Grinding my teeth in my sleep (this is common apparently ) and that eventually this will cause problems down the line as the teeth get more and more worn .

He told me that a dental splint or mouth guard would be the treatment and this would cost about €300 and to go have a think about it . It is effectively a mouth guard like those used in sport but possibly customized to match my exact mouth and teeth profile.

The thing is I see a lot of items marketed as mouth guards for my condition that come in from €1.46 to €30

What is so special about the one the Dentist will give me that it costs ten times the price of the ones online ?

Has anyone suffering from teeth grinding tried the cheaper ones or the dentists mold and how did you get on ?

Buy a half decent one in elverys one that u put in hot water and the gel makes impression when u bite into it. Around 30 quid lasts a year or so i pop it into half a cheapo denture tablet hr before use to give it a clean. Takes getting used to but stops you saying out stuff in ur sleep as a bonus.

The soft guards are meant for sports use and not for grinding at night.
Due to them being soft they actually cause you to grind more.
In addition, if you are grinding so much that you need a guard, you will grind through the soft one in no time ...I know from experience.

I wear a hard night guard which I've had years.

I didn't pay 300€ for my own mouth/teeth-guards (circa 200€ iirc) but have lasted years.

Look, you only get "these" adult teeth once, so look after them while you can. The fact that this is recommended suggests to me that damage has been done already so you're kinda already on the back-foot.

Those sports-shops mouth-guards are temp, for sports, and not fit-for-this-intended-purpose imo. Huge difference between a mouth-guard and a teeth-guard.
Besides, this will pay for itself over time.
These teeth-guards are unique for you. A mould of your teeth is taken and returned for your trial-fit, to check if any minor adjustments your dentist can make is needed. Your teeth are isolated in each "compartment" and prevent continuous grinding as could happen in a mouth-guard as they wrap around entire-set-of-teeth.

Hope I'm explaining the difference okay.
As I said, I use and looking at guard the damage prevented is incredible.

I think mine was no more than €130.....some dentists are very much rip-off merchants

All mouthguards are not the same. There are soft ones and hard ones and soft/hard ones. There are simple ones and ones with a custom bite pattern on them. The fees and times needed to make them vary a lot with specification.

For grinding a custom one is the only good option, for sports gum shields custom ones are also better and more protective.

The only rip off is getting one that is not fit for purpose. At the end of the day its up to you to decide what value you place on it.

I found this article . It makes for interesting reading . It proposes that guards make grinding worse . Ill raise it with my dentist.
