Router bit causing tear out

    12mm spiral up cut bit. Don't remember it causing gb this much tear out before. It's not a cheap bit, about a year old. Does it need to be sharpened?

    A spiral upcut will caus that tear out going across grain like that. The idea is that it cuts up thus pulling the dust out when routing

    Ah, I should have orientated the work for the groove to go with the grain. Another thing to try and remember when laying out cuts on a sheet of plywood!

    You could use a marking knife to cut the fibres before making the cut,
    in a similar situation.

    Upcut spiral bits are really for clearing the chips. A downcut bit will give much better results, Although expensive, I find spiral bits much cleaner for joint cutting.
