Hire or Buy?

    Hi guys,

Have a bit of dilemma here.

I've done a video promo for my product- a guy who I know shot it with his team at mates rates thankfully. But now we need some more footage to get it right.

Only thing is, they're not available for the next 10 days and I'm on a deadline.

As it's simple footage to capture (just talking to camera mostly), I reckon I can do it myself.

What they were using was :

Panasonic GH4 (no idea what lens - no idea what one would be suitable for me)
Boom mic (I'd need a clip on for solo shooting)
Various Led lights (I think one would suffice for me)
    Tripod

Now I reckon I'd get a bit of use out of this setup in the future, but I reckon I'd need at least a grand to buy it.

Looks like the rental for that for a weekend would be around 250'ish. Seems like an easier option, as I can get it all in one place and quickly.

Or reckon it's better to invest, and buy the stuff outright (won't likely be using it again for a few months anyway)?

I do hope you realise that shooting is just one part of the process. There is also the post production. That is the case for Stills & Video. Without it the results are likely to look very amateurish. What is required is not just the gear but the knowledge of how to use it and make a professional product. I take it that your friend and his team have those skills, do you?

If it's a simple job you may be better off asking your friend to recommend someone else who also has the required gear and skill set to do that job. I know that is how it works with photographers who are unavailable so would be the same for video too. That is if the quality is important to you.

Oh for sure, they would still be looking after the editing and post production in any case, as I know how crucial this is for the right look.

It's just their availability to physically film it, so trying to weigh up what the best solution is.

If the result is important to you I would suggest getting someone with experience.

Dont know if you got this figured out, but when I rented a lens before they told me that if I bought it within the next 12 months they would take the cost of the rental off the price. So there might not be a rush to buy now.
