Charity tax returns

    Hi guys,

Just wondering if anyone can help. I'm chair of a small charity which is in the process of winding down as we are no longer necessary (a good thing!) but I'm really struggling to find information- revenue are zero help.

I have to file returns for 2014-2016 (we stopped operating in 2016) and the previous accountancy firm is based where our treasurer until 2014 is based, which is miles away from me. I have been told (by Revenue) that we should file a Form 1.

I have been struggling to find an accountancy firm who will take this on (seriously) because our income is about 1000 per year.

Is it possible to return this myself, or do I need a particular charity tax accountant to fill in the paperwork? Because of organisation is so small we have a basic income & expenditure book filled in.

I'm a little confused by your post.

You are the chair of a charity. So were there annual accounts prepared and audited and filed with the CRO.

It is an annual requirement to file accounts with the CRO. The Revenue usually don't require a CT1 for charities.

If the accounts are already done then it only a matter of filling out the CT1s it should be straight forward for you to do.

We are not a registered company, so there’s no requirement for us to file with the CRO. We have filed with the CRA as required. It’s our tax obligations that I need to get straightened out (there was a big change on the committee in 2015, hence not filing with Revenue (an oversight) however we’ve been in touch with them- but as I said, they’re not overly helpful with small clarifications).

Remember to make sure it's a form 1 trusts and estates return rather than a form 1 partnership return.

You can of course prepare the return yourself.
