Poll: M20 - M40 - Other Limerick Scheme

I hope the moderators let me indulge in this poll.

I'd be interested to see what the boardsies from different locations would like to see built first. There's going to be at a minimum, €800m being pumped into an M20. It doesn't look like the M40 NRR is going to be bundled with it. While traffic isn't so bad in Limerick anymore, may the Limerick boardsies would prefer more Limerick Urban based transport schemes. Would the rest of the country prefer the money be spent elsewhere ?

Hence, poll options. I'll split the poll into Boardsies from the following locations

    - Cork
    - Limerick
    - Residents on the N20 route
    - Rest of Ireland

    I'll give the following options

    - Cork resident - Build the M20
    - Cork resident - Build the M40
    - Cork resident - Use the money for other transport in Cork
    - Cork resident - Use the money for Limerick transport schemes
    - Cork resident - Use the money for non transport schemes
    - Limerick resident - Build the M20
    - Limerick resident - Build the M40
    - Limerick resident - Use the money for other transport in Cork
    - Limerick resident - Use the money for Limerick transport schemes
    - Limerick resident - Us the money for non transport schemes
    - N20 resident - Build the M20
    - N20 resident - Build the M40
    - N20 resident - Use the money for other transport in Cork
    - N20 resident - Use the money for other transport in Limerick
    - N20 resident - Use the money for non transport schemes
    - Resident elsewhere - Build the M20
    - Resident elsewhere - Build the M40
    - Resident elsewhere - Use the money for other transport in Cork
    - Resident elsewhere - Use the money for other transport in Limerick

Both the M20 and N/M40 are badly needed, but it will only be with the building of the M20 that the full inadequacy of the R635 (current poor excuse of an NRR) will be under the microscope.

Even on Friday, passible flooding in two small parts of the R635 had the road at a standstill.

As it's the main route for heavy goods going from the Tivoli Docks to Limerick, there are constant backlogs in the primary lane and the climbing lane.
The trucks are present every hour of the day.

Add to that local school traffic from 2.30-4.30pm and commuters coming from the tunnel heading onto the N20, who hit the road at about 6-6.30pm.

From 8am-9.30am and again from 3pm-7pm It's not uncommon to see a mile of traffic in either direction at a standstill, held up at traffic lights at Tinkers Cross,
as people block the main road wanting to turn right towards Glanmire.

The lights for people turning right towards the N20 in Blackpool are totally random as well and add to the traffic and delays.

Build the M20 first. It’s a safety issue even more so than an economic one. The M40 NRR can be built then as it’s necessi will become more apparent.

Definitely the M20 first, it's beyond a joke that the country's second and third biggest cities are connected by a third world road.

The M20 needs to be prioritised. Too many people have lost their lives on the disgrace that is the main Limerick to Cork Road. Many others have had life changing injuries.

At the moment it is easier, faster and much safer for me to go to Dublin than to go to Cork. Even though Dublin is twice as far away from me.

The M20 must be the priority. It’s a no-brainer as the existing road is unfit for purpose, dangerous and overloaded with traffic.

I'd much rather the money be split and spent on transport improvements in Cork and Limerick cities. In Limerick in particular a much improved public transport network could be built with €3 or 4 million.

Create Motorway from Limerick to Cahair connecting to M8, upgrade Dunkettle for the Euro port at Ringaskiddy, traffic all traffic diverts to M8 and can go Limerick, Waterford or Dublin. Then create proper NRR

I spent a year in Cork. Used to go to Mallow sometimes for the sake of it really. Off peak times. The N20 was a disgrace. Even off-peak it was a joke, mainly that 2+1 section that was really 1+1 with a divider for most of it, on account of all the crossing traffic. Worse than if they'd just left it as a Super 2. The one time I went through to Limerick on it I regretted doing so almost immediately. Utterly pathetic excuse for a road.

Cahir is miles out of the way between Cork and Limerick, between the Fermoy toll and the extra petrol/diesel used to traverse the extra miles, most would continue to use the N20 which would still be used very heavily - Mallow and the other towns would all need bypassing (at minimum) anyway in any case no matter what happens.

The M20 provides a direct link between Cork and Limerick while also providing proper bypasses for all the towns en-route.

What could be built for 3 or 4 million? The figures quoted for the M20 are in the order of hundreds of millions.

Sorry, meant 3 or 4 hundred million. Limerick has a lot of under/dis used rail lines which could support a good commuter service.

Great, but the N20 would still be a pathetic death-trap. And a nightmare for the people of all the towns en-route.

In addition to the existing N20 needing upgrades and bypasses it’s good to give long distance traffic the option of using M7 and M20 if there was any closures or problems with the M8.

The NRR needs to be included as part of M20 planning, the SRR is at breaking point and getting worse by the week, Bishopstown fly over is at crawling speed heading east bound recently.

Any talk of building motorway from Cahir to Limerick needs to be scrapped asap, it's typical Irish short sighted , half assed, penny pinching logic.
