Cold Dog Driving Me Mad

My 5 year old Whippet is driving me mad. He likes his blanket on him at night as a lot of dogs do but after wiggling and moving during the night it comes off him and then the fun starts.

He then comes in to the bedroom and taps me on the head with his paw until I wake up and go downstairs with him to cover him up. If we lock the bedroom door ( he can open them if not locked ) he taps on the door and crys until you wake up. If we lock him with his bed in the kitchen he starts barking when he wants his blanket. I honestly haven't slept a whole night in weeks.

I was wondering if a covered dog bed is a thing or even if putting his bed in a kids tunnel lined with a soft blanket.

Basically looking for ideas on how to keep him covered or some way of him being able to get under his blanket that means I can get a good night's sleep.

    All ideas most fearfully received.

I'd try a childs cot blanket easily got in a charity shop and put a wire in the front edge and back along two sides so it makes a tunnel opening and leaves about half the blanket flat on the floor. The wire can just be pushed through as a test or sown in. The dog can then crawl in as far as he wants. May or may not work but cheap and easy to try.

The question really is does the dog want the blanket or your attention?

You can get fleecy pajamas for lurchers etc and you can also get beds called cuddle caves for them so they are covered over completely by the bed itself.

They do get very cold. My mothers lurcher used to wake her in the night also if her blanket came off her.

Sorry, I know it must be really annoying but that's incredibly cute too 😂
Some kind of fleece blanket sewn into a long sock shape with a hot water bottle or electric heat pad underneath?

Has anyone ever tried a heat lamp in this sort of case?

Examples - 25/100W ceramic normally used for reptiles https://www.amazon.co.uk/Poultry-Heat-Infra-Titan-Incubators/dp/B0185SPHB0/ or bigger 250W often used for chicks https://www.amazon.co.uk/Poultry-Heat-Infra-Titan-Incubators/dp/B0185SPHB0/ . Certainly seen the larger wattage ones used for pups.

Obviously could be attached to a thermostat

    Thanks for the ideas.

Definitely going to look in to the dog cages. They look really cosy for him. He has a knitted pair of pyjamas but still likes the blanket over him

It could well be attention he is after aswell. He likes to roam the house at night looking in on the kids and making sure they are still there.

In the summer he will come in to see us but doesn't wake us up. Only when it gets chilly does he purposely wake me up. And only me.

He has a hot water bottle in a furry cover, a nice comfy bed and a blanket aswell as a duvet if it gets really cold. He is spoilt for sure.

    He's gorgeous!!
The heat lamp is a good idea if it isn't too expensive, I've seen them used in rescue for sighthounds.

Any pics of him in his Jammies? :)

What a gorgeous boy!! He sounds like a little pet, checking in on everyone! During the Winter we set our heat to come on for a couple of hours if we're out so Milo won't get cold so not sure if you'd consider doing that or if it might help.

Here's Milo cuddled up in bed! :D

A cuddle cave is your best bet, or any sort of bed that has an in-built flap that can't be kicked off. I bought one on eBay for about €50 with shipping. He'll break your heart otherwise as the weeks go on. With the fleece pyjamas/coat I was afraid our girl was going to overheat at night but it's a good interim solution.

That's his bed 😀. No way would my wife allow him on ours. Not that he doesn't sneak in when he gets the chance.

Whippets will do anything for comfort and a good sleep.

Haha this is my favourite thread in ages! I know it must be very annoying for you but it is very funny and so so cute! That picture is brilliant as well. They are such a funny breed.

My mam tucks her lurcher in every night at the same time, on the sofa in the living room. If you stay up past her bedtime she gets annoyed and does lots of sighing and giving you the stink eye. Dad told me he stayed up a little late the other night watching something and she actually started to growl at him. So he abandoned his programme "before she ate me"!

It made me laugh so much because she's truly the gentlest dog, so she must have been really p**sed off!

There are also self-heating Thermal mats/bed crates etc. Normally around €10
    https://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Dpets&field-keywords=Self+Warming+Pet+Bed

Straw bale mats are also excellent. They allow the dog to keep a consistent temperature.

Lol.My lurcher is the same. Bought a single electric blanket ( he sleeps on the couch). Not a dickybird out of him since. Mind you, he will defend his couch tooth and nail. He only shares with one specific cat. :-)

Those are brilliant posts, I'm LOLing here. So cute.
Still waiting for a pic of the OP's dog in its PJs please!

I can't find a picture of him in his PJ' s . I know I have one somewhere. He hates wearing them. As soon as he sees them he drops to the floor and pulls his legs in underneath him and pushes his head in to the carpet.

If you do manage to get them on him he walks around stiff legged as if his knees won't work. He really looks miserable.

    Great fun

This is definitely the cutest thing!!
mine growls at me if i move around too much while he's trying to sleep in my bed, and he has to sleep on my housecoat. like "stfu and go back to sleep" kinda growling. He gets a hot water bottle sometimes as well.
    Pjs is a great idea!!

Lucy snores, kicks/runs!! I've admitted defeat and putting the 2 hi-k9s up on adverts later lol! She always ends up in my bed anyways - sometimes she even likes to start off on her bed then wake me up during the night telling me she wants to come onto the bed and waits to be invited! The other fella sleeps downstairs so his is wasted anyways!

At least Lucy waits to be invited!!!!!

Mr C starts in his own bed, waits till we’re asleep and then digs up the duvet without being invited. My OH says I now just lift the duvet in my sleep when he pops up :)
