Radiator DIY

Long story short, the other day I was fitting a skirting board in my upatairs spare bedroom when I accidentaly smashed the radiator valve with the hammer, causing water to spray out. I put a handkerchief into the pipe to stop the deluge.

Instead of paying for a plumber, what can I do myself to fix this problem?
