    Lads,

I have been looking for a Laptop for my nephew who is in college. I came across this Lenovo in Harvey Norman for € 769 plus they have 10% off, so I can get it for 700...do you think it is a good deal?

In the specs it says storage is SSD+HDD, Do you think it is a mistake? sounds too good to be true :D

    Thanks

The spec does look good. The 256GB + 1TB HDD almost sounds too good to be true at this price point. The processor is not detailed, but it looks to be an entry level quad core from Intel. Which will be fine. It even has a low end graphics card which should enable some light gaming.

All in all it looks like a good machine tbh. Basic CPU and graphics, but the SSD is a huge win at this price point. The screen looks to be 1080p which is another win. The only slight concern could be the size and weight, but for the price I think it's worth it.

Thank you very much for the detailed reply.

Probably getting greedy now...have been looking at this Dell too and it is for € 649...this has the latest 8th gen processor.

It's not bad for the money. But I'd confirm the specs. It says Nvidia graphics at the top, then radeon in the specs. It also says i5, then says pentium in the specs.

It's not a bad price for an i5 and Nvidia chip when buying locally and not online. If it's a pentium chip, it's way overpriced. The SSD and FHD display is nice.

I'd go in store and ask to check the specs.

yep contradicting specs...here are the specs on Lenovo Site

Think this is not available in store, it doesn't have the option to check in-store.

Found one with similar specs in Argos it's €899.00 though

Hmmm, maybe call Harvey Norman's head office. It's a long shot, but they might be able to confirm specs, i5, 8GB, SSD and the graphics card are what you need for a super machine.

Lets not get too hung up on Intels annoyingly vague processor names. The processor is perfectly fine for most tasks. It is a 'pentium' branded chip and not an i5, but I see little cause for concern here. Still quad core, and will still do almost everything. It is a latest gen.

Same for the graphics, this is not a gaming machine, but the AMD chip is better than an integrated card that comes with most laptops at this price point. I'd count that as a win here.

All in all it presents good value. I haven't seen anything with close to this spec for the same money in the last while.

I wouldn't call anyone, go into the store and see for yourself OP. They might correct a misprice if you go this route.

He is not much into gaming so I'm not worried about that...All i'm interested is a good processor i5/i7 preferably latest Gen, 8 GB Ram and decent storage - would like SSD but that would up the price...did you check the Dell one...was thinking i can get that and if needed can add in 128 SSD...good idea?:D

thought same, if I ring them they might adjust the price...or I can buy it and if doesn't have SSD i can always return it? ;)

I'm not sure where you've been looking?!

This has i7, dedicated and a 512GB ssd. A pentium is not value at that price

They have more if you don't want to spend that much, but the specs will cover you for years to come.

There's this if you want to spend less than 700 and dedicated graphics aren't required

Plenty more on their site. Best of luck!

No worries, maybe have a look at komplett.ie and elara.ie who both have decent deals. They're in Ireland too.

Just found this one with dedicated radeon graphics

Yeah the Harvey Norman one appears to have just random made up specs. According to Lenovo it has a basic Pentium Quad - same as would be found in a €250 laptop - and a Radeon M430, which would be about the same speed as modern Intel integrated graphics.

The 256GB SSD and 1080p screen are nice but I wouldn't pay €700 for that machine.

The HP linked above is a much faster laptop, though I would recommend you google things like screen quality, battery life, etc. Not all laptops are equal in this regard.

People also get too hung up on dedicated vs integrated graphics. Low end cards like GT920M, Radeon M430, etc are all barely faster than the Intel integrated graphics found in modern i5 or i7 processors, if at all in some cases.

The Radeon 520 in the HP from Komplett linked above would be better than the Intel GPU in most processors though.
