Hi Guys, I use an external audio enhancement device to boost the sound of my Toshiba, and the socket for the jack plug has become larger and now it is too small to fit and the sound system won't work. I imagine that the surround on the hole has been pushed into the laptop. Can anyone tell me if I can fix it please ( i.e. can I take the bottom of the laptop off and find the ring and put it back at the front so that the jackplug fits properly again)?

Well we need to know the laptop you are using. Make, model, year. But yes you will have to open it up, and that is the easy part. I would suspect that the headphone jack has come off the motherboard, that is not a trivial job to replace. It will need to be re-soldered.

Best take it to a repair place. But be careful, I would expect this to be a difficult repair and it could be relatively expensive. If the laptop is old you could go down down the route of buying a USB audio card, which you can then use to plug headphones into it.

Thanks Alanstrainor. It is a Toshiba Satellite C-855 purchased in 2013. There is another socket hole beside it and the jack fits it but it doesn't work in that one. Do you know what that one is for by any chance? It is the one beside the USB port.

on some soundcard software you can retask the ports, might be worth plugging into the one that fits and try settings on your soundcard

Not really as i have only seen it once on an older pc, when i plugged something in to any jack port a screen came up asking what type of input or output device did i want to setup.

    That's the microphone jack

To fix it yourself you need to be able to solder small components if two pins touch you could be looking at a dead laptop.

To get it fixed in a shop will cost €60-€120 depending on the damage done and cost of parts.

This will solve your problem but it will be sticking out the side of your laptop.

Thanks GarIT. I'll take it to the shop.

I'd have brought them to the small claims court over that first one. It might be an idea to create a guest account for them to use, they shouldn't need administrator privileges for replacing an audio jack.
