So i'm purchasing either a 2016 or 2017 Renault Traffic Sport Nav Van with less then 100 miles on the clock and im VAT registered . The dealer says i have to pay the VAT and claim it back when i go home from the Queen (HMRC) How do i go about this ? And also is it still just €200 VRT to clear ? Any other things to look out for ? I think i should have it here for £17350 or €20,000 VAT Included

It would be much easier if the car was VAT qualifying - once your Irish VAT ID is valid, you'd need just to pay the net price and pay VAT on importation here.

If you import an unused non-VAT qualifying car you pay full price and need to claim VAT back from Revenue. Start reading here: https://www.copart.co.uk/Content/UK/EN/_Forms/VAT-Information.pdf

Yes a friend done the Same in the North a few weeks ago and what he had to do was make up an order on a sheet of paper of what exactly kind of van he wanted and gave it to the dealer .He In turn filled out some other form for UK Revenue and he paid without the VAT as he was VAT registered- now obviously he was more obliging. But I'm just wondering why that isn't VAT qualifying it is so new - or is it that the Renault dealer dosn' t want to do that .How could you make it VAT qualifying ?

Would a commercial not be VAT qualifying either way?

For being VAT qualifying, a vendor must be payee of the VAT and be able to issue VAT invoice. Many of the commercials are owned by self-employed tradesmen that don't pay the VAT, and such cars won't be VAT qualified.

Any new car supplied by a dealer will be VAT qualifying, but a pre-owned car might not be.

But we are talking about a commercial vehicle here, the vast majority of which will be VAT qualifying in the UK, especially 2016/2017 models.

OP - depends on the dealer. We imported 2 VAT qualifying cars at the same time in 2012 from 2 different dealerships. Had to pay VAT from one dealer and reclaim it from them, after they'd had the VAT refunded, once the vehicle was registered in Ireland, but the other one invoiced it ex. VAT against an Irish VAT number.

Dealers in the UK might be slightly wary as they are liable for the VAT if it doesn't all go as it should, and by the time they find that out, the car/van is well gone at that stage, in this case to another country, so they've no hope of recovering anything.
