Site Map/Urban place map in A4

    Hi Guys,
I resubmitting planning docs tomorrow, one of the problems that threw me was, I submitted 6 copies of the "site map" that I downloaded from OSI in A4 format, of course it prints to scale in A4.

THe planning pre-checker was saying something about "maybe printing in A3" but it won't be to scale at that size unless I download a new map

so my question is: have you/ can you submit to the council in A4 for the site map? It comes with two sheets , a record place map(large overview of the town) and urban place map(zoomed in on the immediate area of the house)

Do I need to submit both sheets? since it's just a site map they are looking for? Do people just leave it at the Urban place map

    THe offcial reply is:
    THe Site Location Map
-the scale must be correct - ie. drawn to a scale of not less than 1:1000 for urban areas and 1:2500 for rural areas. THe site location maps are not printed to scale.
(WTF, according to my ruler, it sure is to scale)

before you ask, I'm not in a rural area, and I've checked other plans submitted in the area, a few of them submitted in A3 format...but this condition is not outlined in the rules.

    Thanks for any insights.

This may sound stupid, but what size map did you order from OSI?

Was it an A4 or A3 map?

For DCC, A4 maps are fine, but the maps must be to scale.

If you ordered (or got) an A3 map, and printed off on A4, it will not be to scale.

    Maybe that's the issue?

    1. what scale is on the map? i assume you ordered a "planning pack"

    2. you dont need to send in the 6" record place map

im surmising here that what might wrong is that the urban place map printed at a scale of 1:2500 and the validator is suggesting it should be at 1:1000. in cases where this has happened to me, ive explained clearly to them that the 1:2500 scale is the lowest scale available for that site and 1:1000 is not available, even as its an urban site.

This can occur when the OSI maps havent been updated in recently built up areas.

    Hi guys,

THe maps were downloaded with the A4 option....It's says 1:1000 on the Urban place map, when I put the ruler on it, I get 25mm for the 25Metre wide site.
DOCARCH It's printed on the correct size, I understand what you mean, by printing on a different size would shift the scale.

sydthebeat Thank yuo very much, I'll rip off the 6 inch map from my 6 sets, it might be adding confusion, always best to simplify these things.

Going back to the office today, and will stand there until I get an explanation of why, a place map that is clearly printed at the correct scale is being refused.

THe suggestion of 'maybe printing at A3' from one of the guys there, does not fill me with confidence

ok, found the idiot here, It was ME :)

I thought I was being smart, by printing the OS site map, marking it up, scanning it again and then printing off the 6 copies I needed. but as I found out, the process of scanning and printing at A4 shrunk the A4 page slightly, so that the 50M scale ruler at the bottom of the page, which should have being 50mm , was in fact 48mm.

I had to go back and print again from the original and mark up each page separately.

Common mistake made by people not in the area :)

    It happens.

It is sometimes possible to avoid on scans by making sure not to tick the "fit" option in the program from which you are printing.

CAD programs don't have this option for a reason!

Can be an absolute nightmare for land transfers!

I was involved in the early days of ePlanning.
Most people couldn’t understand how to transfer scales across from computers to their online system.

Worked out well in the end but scans never retain their scale.

Sorry - to clarify - I meant controlled scans digitised in one's own office from the paper original with correct scanning profiles.

Definitely not scans downloaded from the LA's website! That'd be madness.

I meant to get users to use the online option of lodging planning applications.
At the start, nobody used it.

There was problems with people converting to PDF and then uploading etc

I wasn’t aware that you could scan something to scale properly. It’s beyond our printers anyway

The technical end is actually not that difficult if you have the correct software/hardware. The problem is that most scanners these days are built into MFPs and automatically scanning into PDF files with generic settings.

The big difficulty is that it's almost impossible to do it with anything that was ever folded because you can never get the crease out!!!
