Galway City Centre - No Broadband Provider

    Hey there,

So I appear to live in a blackspot for broadband from, well, any ISP.

I live slap bang in the middle of Galway City Centre in an apartment block called Altenagh House in Nuns Island. Even though I can see our Cathedral out of our window, and the lads secondary school "The Bish" is 4 doors down, it seems as though no ISP in the country can give us broadband. There is wireless networks all around. In fact I'm connected to an NUIG building that used to let me use my old college login and use their internet.

Anyway I'm just wondering what the hell the problem is. It's extremely frustrating and no ISP seems to be able to tell me what is wrong only that broadband is not available at the address. Any thoughts? I feel like it's 2001 again.

I was driving there last week, saw that building thinking what does Altenagh mean and said to myself: those guys must have very fast broadband indeed, it could be me.
Anyway if you get landline from eir, you should get good BB.

That development has cable. Call Virgin.

Virgin have no services here according to their website. I imagine their customer care will use the same location checker anyway.

I'll give eir a shout but seeing as there's no eir wifi hotspots here and a tonne of apartments I won't hold my breath. Such an oddity.

Have you spoken to any of your neighbours to see what services they use?

Would you be permitted to get an antenna installed outside ?

Plenty of wireless providers around there.

Airwire have bases in Eyre Square and Mervue.

    Few other providers around, too.

    /M

Been in plenty of properties where the website said one thing and the wall point said another.

Wall point could just be for analogue TV which they don’t sell anymore. Could also be for MMDS tv which again they don’t have now.

It would say so on the site. It reporting no services means its likely just wrong.

I don't think it shows up analogue-only addresses any more as it's a legacy product.

That said, I would be checking other apartment numbers to see what they can get

If your not a heavy user take a look at Eir 4G 50GB for 180 days for 30 yoyos.
Use it and when its gone top it up.

Need to get a Huawei B593 with 2 external antenna about 50 euro delivered from a German ebayer.

Speed will vary depending on the base station distance and load but should be fine in Galway city.

The 50GB includes download load and upload so watch out for heavy upload use.

You can check it out with broadband SIM in a 4G phone.

That thread was some find! Unfortunately it appears like nothing has changed although Virgin have told me that their area manager and engineer are going to visit the block next week. At least they seem to be taking it somewhat seriously, it's a big black spot!

Don't get your hopes up. It's a long process.
