I interviewed for a role last week and was told to expect a response by friday. On Friday I got this response back:

    "apologies for my late reply.
Unfortunately, I don`t have feedback for you yet. As we would change the role from its original scope, I can only get the decision approved in the context of an company wide budget review. This will probably take another 2 weeks.
Many apologies if this causes any inconveniences for you. Please let me know, if you have urgent deadlines coming up.
In hope you understand the situation"

I previously met with the ceo and another company head and when I interviewed for the role the person that interviewed me said i made a great impression from when I initially met the team.

(the change in job scope is i am supposed to manage an offsite team of 6 but I don't speak any german. So I can't do it, yet. However I have started learning and said i will be comfortable enough to start managing the team within 6 months and without training wheels in 8 months).

My girlfriend is thinks its a done deal, I don't want to get my hopes up. What do you think?

If you can learn German that quickly fair play to you. Will you be living in Germany?

They are broadening the role and if you have serious competition from someone who can speak German then you are at a distinct disadvantage.
You probably should need to impress on them your confidence in picking up the language.
It's a bit unfair of them to move the goalposts so late.

I agree regarding the German part. However regarding the change in scope. The job description did say German is required but the CEO suggested I may be a good fit. Then during the interview my interviewer said they might have to allow the current person dealing with the team to continue to do so for the time being.

So the change in scope is purely for me . essentially they need to figure out money issues for the role without the aspect of managing the team .

I doubt posting the email exchange along with specifics of the situation on a public forum is likely to increase the chances of a positive outcome.

Edit - had a quick look at your profile. You mentioned your long term GF's brother is a "career criminal". I'm not certain I understand what that means, but I'm reasonably sure it's not a conversation I'd like to have with a potential employer.

Honest question, are you pursuing a sensible course of action right now with this thread?

I'd be more worried about actually being able to manage a team of 6 with German that has only been picked up in 6 months.

I doubt it will be much of a struggle. The majority of germans/swiss will have good-high level of english. So that combined with a reasonable level of german (which will only improve as he speaks it regularly in Zurich) should be fine.

I'd check if the team are Swiss German speakers or not, would make it a little harder in conversation if you are learning High German. Not the biggest of issues though, but would make it harder for a new speaker.

To me, it sounds like their creating time to see if they can find a German speaker, It's a bit a strange for a company to rely on a new employee to learn a language to a high level to manage a team, to many variables that could do wrong. What happens in 8 months if you can't manage the team in German? Why not just keep the manager who fill in for you while you learn German? The reply is a bit of a fob off IMO.

Good point. I interviewed with the lady who would be my boss and she did say she can look at allowing the current manager manage the team while I learn.

The post indicates they want you for a role that wasn’t initially given as a req. so now they need to get funding for that role. If that works you are in.

It really doesn’t sound like that at all. If they didn’t want him it’s easy to say they are not interested.

To me it sounds like you're still in the running but it is far from a done deal (I think the first post from Mr.S is a good take on things).
