Alfa Romeo, white smoke

Any tips? Not burning oil, no coolant in oil (or vice-versa), smoke smells like unburnt diesel, little power in low range. Any input would be great, thanks.

Take it to a specialist, people are only guessing here. I guess EGR

Injector 3 was missing so I had it refurbed. Still rough, still smokey. I was told the other injectors are fine.

I would if I could afford it at the moment. Right now I'm trying to eliminate all possibilities and do whatever bits I can myself. I cleaned out the EGR during the summer but I'll give it another look this weekend. Even then it wasn't that bad. A bit sooty but no compact carbon and solenoids moved freely.

Have you fiat ecu scan?(multiscan I think it's called now)... might throw up some codes.

I'd say injector too letting in heaps of fuel.
Could be Maf too telling it to overfuel... worth unplugging that and see if things improve.

Get your biggest screwdriver and put the tip on each injector and the other end to your ear while it's ticking over... move along the injectors and see if any of them sound considerably different to the rest.

    Marty.

Thanks man, I have the Torque Pro app (I don't think Multiecuscan works on Linux at the moment) but I'm not getting any errors. I've unplugged the MAF and MAP and everything remains the same.

The stethoscrewdriver was how I found out about injector 3 missing. After doing the refurb, all cylinders now sound roughly the same. Or at the very least, the metal-on-metal hammering sound of a faulty injector is now gone.

I threw up the question on alfaowners and it looks increasingly like bad valves :( Regardless, weekend project will be checking over the EGR again, having a look at the throttle body and doing a compression test.

Did this happen overnight or has it hotten progressively worse towards the current state?

Make sure you check for air leaks around thd EGR and I take manifold and all your hoses tovturbo and intercooler

Had read this thread earlier in the week and only thing going through my head at the moment is loss of compression. Compression test would be next step as in your plans. No other reason for it to sound as rough as it is with injectors done. If compression is being lost upwards through valves, possibly explains the unburnt fuel as it is being passed into exhaust system (not enough compression to generate the heat needed to ignite the fuel spray).

Get a diagnosis done. I'd be going with the line of injectors too judging by that video.

It sounds like you're down at least 1 cylinder. Given there's no spark in a diesel, I'd be inclined towards getting a compression test done, see if you're down anywhere. I have a petrol compression tester (two actually, don't ask) that has a tapered push-fit attachment, narrowest part might go down a diesel glow plug orifice.
