Is it possible to use standard Sat finder on Sky Q

Storm Ophelia caused my sisters Sky Q to stop working. I had a look on the way home from work and the Dish had moved completely round. The Lnb arm was also very loose. Poor form for a new 2 month old install though it was strong wind I suppose. Anyway I am going to bring my sat finder “thingy” tomorrow but now am wondering if it’s even possible to use it? Does Sky Q Lnb work with the standard Sat finder that I’ve used countless times? No point climbing back up if it doesn’t.

No it wont you will temporarily have to swap out her lnb with a standard one and then swap it back when your finished, and aligning a sat dish with a sat finder and not a proper satellite meter aint always successful either...

Thanks for that. I’ve got a couple of standard ones in the shed. Will give it a try so. It’s November 6th before Sky can send out someone. If I can get it working with the finder it’ll do her for now. Let them check it when they come out.

I can't see any reason why a sat finder would not work. They are crude devices that just look for signals between 950 and 2150 MHz which a sky Q LNB will provide and more.
So give it a go and let us know.

Same happened with me during the storm. It looked about 15 degrees off. Using the sat finder would have been a bit of a nuisance for me yesterday morning before heading off to work. But using http://www.dishpointer.com/ I could pick out a good reference point from my location to point at. I moved it by hand, lined it up by eye and viola, perfect signal quality.

I reckon I was a bit lucky so YMMV ;)

I believe the power provision is below normal so the satfinder may not be able to function at all. Could be wrong.

The power, of course, is provided by the receiver, so if this is true temporarily changing the LNB to a standard one would not work.

Probably 12 volts, & should be enough.

Due to work I finally got around to looking at the dish today. Tried the sat finder with the Q box and Lnb. It worked and allowed me to align the dish but I couldn’t get signal on the box. After trying for ages I swapped the Lnb and box for an old sky hd version. The sat finder allowed me then to fine tune the position. Maybe the lower voltage of the Q made the sensitivity harder to fine tune. The old Lnb seemed to be necessary for me anyway. Job done signal strength 80 and quality 90.

    Thanks for the advice

Good point - do all the SkyQ boxes have the option for that?
