Hopefully they’ll make them promise not to do it again.

Gob****e! It amazes me the stupidity of some of the people who are caught in this thread. Speeding while having no tax or insurance or even licence sometimes. If I was to drive(not that I would) with out any certs or licence I would be extremely careful. They don't care sure take my car I don't care I will just buy another for €100-150 that drives and be back out driving again without a care in the world.

Would they not impose a custodial sentence?

Revolving door system for those crimes.

Now if you don't pay your TV licence...................................

If you follow this thread then you will see these people don't care. Once or twice in this thread alone someone was caught car impounded and then they are caught later in the day driving again.

That's beggars belief Jesus. It must be disheartening for the Gardaí to do their job well only for the judge to make a mockery of their work and let the scum out with a slap on the wrist.

And that's just the ones that were caught. There are some who are at it years and never caught. It is rare alright to catch someone twice in the same day. Usually they would be caught again a few months later. Brought to court and banned again. Just to let them go home and drive again. There really should be stricter sentences for it tbh.

    ..............you get a fine.

Imprisonment is the most common option.

The above is unusual but nothing surprises me with the TV licence.

A Judge in the District Court is limited in what penalty/disqualification/fine/imprisonment he or she can give an accused appearing before them. Legislation and precedent sets out the limits - if you think the penalties are too light you need to make representations to your local TD for change in legislation.

It may be the most common option for contempt of court but not for not having a TV licence.

I feel your sarcasm detector may need tuning as well as the Tv btw.

Told you before and I'll say agin. Prison in lieu of fines is gone except in extreme circumstances.

They'll attach to earnings, if no earnings they'll give community servcie, only if you do not do community sewrvice is prison considered and no longer is it a few hours and home, you now serve 75% of the sentence as with the revolving door system gone, they have the space to keep you.

It comes as a big shock to the very few who go that far and I hear that big boys cry penty of tears when they realise that 28 days means 3 weeks (after 25% remission) not 3 hours and that social welfare payments are stopped for those 3 weeks.

I can't find the legislation concerning people on welfare.

time for me to park it and get back on topic.

It may be the most common option for contempt of court but not for not having a TV licence.

So been told not to drive 10/15 times by a judge and getting banned consistently without a licence isn't contempt of court lol. And these lads probably have no tax/nct/insurance. What's the TV equivalent, robbing cable TV, electricity and having a stolen TV maybe?

Your treated worse by the courts for no TV licence, yet going around with no licence driving licence is basically going around with a loaded weapon. You can't kill a person cause you've no TV licence yet you can if your not training and competent to drive a car and stick to the rules/laws of the road.

No you're not treated worse for not TV licence. It's a simple case. You go in , judge gives you a fine and you pay it. No different to an unpaid parking ticket.

It's when people start taking the piss and refuse to pay court issues fines that they get in trouble. At that stage it's irrelevant that you were originally in court for not having a TV licence (and ignoring the subsequent fines)

I thought there was no remission on short sentences.
