Appliances not working after Ophelia

We were without electricity for about 5 hours yesterday during and after Ophelia, but thankfully power came back on last night.

This morning I found that both my induction hob and my microwave oven aren't working properly. That is, they both turn on and run, but they don't heat.

The induction hob is De Dietrich, none of the burners work. The lights come on, they hum, but no heat. Also when you remove the pan, usually the indicator blinks in preparation for turning off -- this doesn't happen, the light stays on.

With the microwave (Sanyo), it appears to work -- keypad is lit and functions, light comes on, carousel turns, it hums when you turn it on --- though much more quietly than usual --- but no heat.

Repair jobs or insurance phone call? The hob I would hate to lose, has been perfect for 15 years, works as a set with the hood.

Sounds like there may have been a power surge before the power cut out.

If the microwave just hums quietly without changing tone every now and again, then your magnetron is boned. Usually cheaper to replace the whole thing than get it repaired.

With the hob it may be a simple fuse or part inside it that controls the current to the plates has shorted, so probably worth getting in touch with a specialist repairer to see if it's an easy fix.

No harm calling your insurer to see what they say. They may tell you to get quotes and come back to them. They are going to be inundated with calls, so the claims handlers will be willing to do whatever they can to close your case.

    Thanks, Seamus.

In case it was a power surge, I better check everything else before ringing the insurer (or deciding whether to bother). Newish (5 years old?) refrigerator is working, but it's louder when it comes on, as if it's struggling. Need to check washing machine and dishwasher, and various computer equipment.

I'll take your advice on seeking repair for the hob.

FYI: I did a bit of investigative work. New Zanussi washing machine had error message EHO, which means "unstable electricity supply." Neighbors also having similar problems. Rang ESB and they tell me there is reduced electrical supply in the area, they're trying to restore full power. So hopefully that's the problem, instead of a power surge that wrecked the appliances. BTW they said to unplug anything important as there's a danger of power surge while they're working on it. Hope this might help someone else in similar situation.
