New emissions surcharge for vehicles in London

    From the 23rd October drivers in central London will need to pay an Emissions Surcharge (a.k.a. "Toxicity Charge" or "T-Charge") if their vehicle does not meet minimum exhaust emission standards. The T-Charge is £10 and is on top of the Congestion Charge bringing the daily fee to £21.50. Drive into the congestion charge zone with a Euro 3 car or HGV and you will be caught out. But this is just the start. By 2020 we could have over 30 Clean Air Zones (CAZ) around the UK, while the London ultra-low emission zone could come in to force by 2019 (and unlike the T-charge, will apply to the whole area inside the north and south circulars). The minimum standard for a CAZ will be high – Euro VI/6 for all diesel vehicles, Euro IV/4 for petrol. So, if you are working on reducing energy use in transport fleets make sure you pay close attention to the new restrictions arising out of attempts to clean up air quality in the UK’s towns and cities. And remember the minimum standards are just that – the minimum; several cities are now looking at Zero Emission Zones."

    It's interesting clicking through that website, it doesn't so much check the car itself, rather it checks when the car was registered - and uses that to determine if one is affected. The power of enforcing minimum standards for sale...

    I have marked the relevant parts before we get the 'diesel ban' brigade here. New diesels (typically those with Ad-blue injection) will not be affected at all.

    If you drive in to London you’re already aware it’ll cost you £11.50 during the day on weekdays, but the ULEZ charge comes on top of that and will costs you an extra £12.50 unless you have a car TfL consider emissions friendly.

    That basically means a diesel car that’s Euro 6 compliant (generally built from 2016) or a petrol car that’s Euro 4 compliant (build since around 2006), although some cars were compliant before those dates (a 2003 Toyota Corolla, for example, is Euro 4). And if your car was built before 1979 it’s exempt.


    Thats a hefty charge if you have an old car... £24! That will focus alot of minds I'd say.

    I wonder how long before something like that gets implemented here? It would need a strong government for a start, as there would be uproar.

    Should have been done a long time ago in Dublin, but that would be pointing out the fact that successive governments have failed to implement a proper capital city public transportation system that would reduce car dependency altogether.

    if you need to be in london city during the day for work, chances are 12 or 24 quid wont phase you. its basically just a 'diesels without a DPF go f*ck off' measure to try and say the air quality is better.

    Is the money that good in london that people can just pay out 24 quid per day.
    Surely it would make more sense to have an exempt car given the costs mentioned.

    It doesn't stipulate diesel as the sole fuel being targeted though, just any vehicle below a particular Euro standard.

    Anyway, the burning question on everyones lips is will they still be using Euro emissions standards post Brexit or will they be creating a new Imperial threshold :).

    Until you have an alternative that is as cheap, accessible and reliable as private transport, you can't.

    Oh, and, people seem to forget how, oh, I dunno, like FOOD gets delivered by trucks. And always will be.
