    As an aside, when our planet was young it was molten so most of the heavy metals sank towards the centre.

    Most of the platinum group metals we have today came from asteroids that arrived after the planetary crust formed.

    certainly some have arrived that way but not most. most have risen from deep inside the earth on thermal circulatory currents, and these have sometimes been ejected by volcanic action.
