Passat or Accord?

Thinking of upgrading my 07 diesel Passat. Need it for work so must have a reasonably spacious boot. Budget around 15-20k.
Passat again? - if so will go for the 15 model although I'm not mad on the rear aesthetics (petty I know).
Or was considering a Honda Accord, which I don't know an awful lot about. I know they stopped selling them new a while back so would probably end up with a '14 model? Not so common as passats so haven't seen one to test drive. Is the boot decent ? And would one recommend in general. I guess with the model discontinued they will be a bit more dated than the new model Passat? Not in a particular hurry - may wait til new year, but also thought that dealers would be anxious to shift stock before year end , so may be more value.
Anyway, opinions welcome and thanks in advance.

I'd be looking at a few nice high specced Skoda Octavia's myself.....

The Accord is a super car, but has a smallish and slightly inaccessible boot (which you mentioned as a requirement). Also, no spare wheel as standard, so if you need to get one that will take up more space in your boot.

I had an 09 ex spec Accord Diesel. Was a lovely car. Boot on the small side and rear legroom also not great. Mpg was also on the low side. Lucky to get low 40s on long journeys. Loved the car and the spec though. It's a pity Honda didn't put an updated engine in the Accord in later years. I switched to a honda Civic tourer 1.6 diesel which had mpg of close to 70. Changed that this summer to.dsg 2 litre diesel Octavia. Happy with the Octavia.

    Cheers,
    Mick

The last Accord model was launched back in 2008 and discontinued in late 2013 with left over models sold right up to 2015. Most of the ones registered in 2014/2015 are fairly basic and the design was pretty dated by then also. They were reliable though but fuel economy on the diesel would not have been anything to write home about compared to the competition.

The current model Passat would be light years ahead of the Accord in terms of design and technology. The Octavia while a good car is from the class below the Accord and Passat, it doesn't offer the same standard of refinement as the Accord/Passat class otherwise Skoda would not bother selling the Superb.

The superb and Passat aren't in the same.class..superb is more comparable to a6.

I'd argue a high spec Octavia isn't that far off a low spec Passat which would still cost considerably more

The superb and Passat are aimed at the same market and are heavily based on each other.

If you sat in both a superb is significantly larger than a Passat... Way more boot space leg room etc..

The Superb is miles ahead of the Passat in every way....

There’s 6 litres of extra boot space in a Superb vs. a Passat. Fair enough it’s a hatch as well so it’s more practical, but there really is nothing massive size wise between the current Passat and superb these days. I really like the new Superb by the way.

I recently went to buy an Octavia, ended up buying a Passat. The Octavia is very nice and has a great boot. The Passat is miles ahead in terms of comfort, refinement, and overall size. Also you are going to get loads of people hailing you down in an Octavia :)

The Suberb is also very nice, definitely a little bigger than the Passat ( a little too bulky for me). Not as refined inside.

The newest model Passat is a fine car +1 from me.

A superb is just a Passat with a few inches tacked on. Compared to an A6 the superb isn't in the same league.

Skoda pull the same trick with the Octavia. Tack a few inches on and people think they're from a class above.

    Hondas more reliable than VW.

Accord between 2012 and 2015, first time pass rate of 88.9%

Those stats are American by the looks of it. Doesn’t take the diesel models that the OP would be looking at into account.

Bottom one is NCT, all Irish and includes all models

It doesn’t really tell you much as to how reliable a particular car model is though. Especially when you see why cars fail.

Toyota, Honda and Skoda most reliable for the last 10 years. Vauxhall and Renault least reliable, I'd say it's pretty accurate tbh

Can you explain 'reliable' to me?

This debate always seems to come up.

The Superb and Passat share the same platform and are aimed at the same large family car market. An A6 is not competing in the same market as either of those so there isn't really any comparison there.

And no matter how well speced an Octavia costs it still doesn't have the refinement or packaging of a car from the segment above it. That's where the extra money is spent rather than just on spec. The same way a highly speced Fabia wouldn't have the same refinement or packaging as an Octavia. Refinement and packaging always step up a level the higher up the car segments you go.

Thanks for the replies eyerybody. I guess it's the Passat then over the Accord mostly due to boot and modernity. Always liked the idea of having an Accord due to reputation for reliability, comfort etc, but guess times have moved on and the Accord hasn't (yet?), so it's a bit late.
Thought the thread title might attract a few skoda fans alright.
On that skoda issue, I may consider a superb, but personally I would have compared the Octavia more to a Jetta than Passat.

You obviously haven't heard of the trouble newer Toyotas are giving

You can use the slider to look at cars from 14 to 16, see if it tallies with your perception/anecdotal evidence

Just because you pass a 30 minute inspection doesn't make a car reliable. I recently passed an nct with 4 shocks in my car completely gone because the imbalance was the same all round in them it was a pass. So how car you trust what the nct first time pass rate is and compare it to reliability. If you fail the nct on a bulb, tyre or number plate does that make your car unreliable?

I was in a dilema for whether to order a Passat or a Superb at the end of last year, couldn't make up my mind but the Passat won. Reason being the higher quality interior materials, and i could get the digital dash, the biturbo engine and full LED headlights, a different leaque.

    2.0 TDi - 240bhp from the factory.

Why limit yourself to passat or accord. To my mind there are some other comparable saloons out there, such mazda 6, mondeo, avensis (maybe a bit bland) to name a few.

Big difference between an Avensis and an Accord of same year.......not comparable at all. Not designed to be either tho.
