I recently passed my test but I'm not in a position to buy a car at the moment, is there anyway to hire a car short term? Two hire companies I've checked need the driver to have 1-2 years experience.

Nope. Two years minimum. Some firms will ask for three. You also need to be over 25.

If you are only doing short trips Go Car might allow you to join, it's at their discretion for less than 2 years. It's really designed for short trips so a long journey will be expensive.
