Jumps Season 2017/18 Selections

With the 2017/18 National Hunt season really starting to swing into gear tomorrow, I said I would start a log to see how I get on over the season. Most of the selections well be on the big days when there is better quality of racing, but I will also include selections from smaller meetings. I will try and do a small writeup for all my selections and hopefully I’ll get a few winners throughout the log. First selections at Chepstow and Hexham today. Starting bank of 100pts.

Chepstow 4.10- Sam Spinner 2pts @ 12/1

An ultra-competitive Grade 3 Handicap Hurdle with 18 runners is where I’ve decided to try and pick the first winner of this log and I think Sam Spinner could still be improving and is certainly worth a bet at odds of 12/1. A solid but unspectacular novice campaign last season, saw him win 3 times whilst tasting defeat only once to Grade 2 winner Mount Mews. On that occasion he gave the winner 7lbs and was only defeated by 4 lengths. Mount Mews is now rated 146 and today Sam Spinner will run off a mark of 136. He also beat the 129 rated Master of Irony by 7 lengths off level weights, as well as a 13-length defeat of Reverant Cust a 114-rated animal who was in receipt of over a stone. The 130 rated Mr Monochrome was a further 10 lengths back in 3rd on that occasion. I don’t think returning from a lay off will be an issue for Sam Spinner as on the two occasions he has returned from a break he has been victorious. Jedd O Keefe has a good strike rate with his jumpers and Sam Spinner is his star jumper so he should be primed for a big run on ground he likes over a trip that suits.

Hexham 4.35- Gamain 3pts @ 4/1

A lower quality of racing at Hexham but in the feature event here I fancy the 4/1 favourite Gamain to do the business. On his second run since moving to Nick Williams last month he won by the narrowest of margins at Newton Abbot over an extended 3m 2f. That was Gamain’s first win in over a year and a half and it was his first victory over hurdles since March 2015 when he won off a mark of 109. That is the mark he runs off today and Chester Williams who partnered him to victory last time out, once again takes off 7lbs. The softer ground today and the 2-furlong shorter trip should play in his favour and I think he should go very close off this mark.

A slow start with plenty of the selections running well without winning. The second last weekend in October really turned it around though with 3 winners from 3 selections including one at 16/1.
