Laptop fan overheating

    Hi there,

I have an Acer Aspire 5733 laptop for the past 5 years. Over the past couple of years I have had a recurring problem with the fan overheating. I spent €100 a couple of years back getting the fan replaced, and got a job done on it last year too when it was overheating again. It was fine for a while on each occasion, but the problem always came back. I'm sitting here now and the fan is constantly making noise and the underside of the laptop is very hot...if it gets too hot it shuts itself off. I used to use an Ikea laptop rest but I don't think it is good for the fan as it blocks ventilation...maybe that didn't help! Anyways I'm just wondering what the problem could be...will I need a new fan again, or could it just be dust? Could it be anything else given the problem keeps recurring? I'm really getting sick of this problem coming back

    Thanks for any advice.

If the fan is constantly on it is not the fan that is faulty, the CPU is heating too much which causes the fan to stay on.

Leaving the laptop on a stand that blocks vents is terrible for the laptop, and likely has contributed to the issues you have now.

There could be an issue with dust blocking vents, but really I doubt it, it is never usually enough to cause the issues you describe. More probably I would guess that the thermal paste on the CPU is no longer working as it should and it needs to be replaced. This is not a straight forward job unfortunately and I would wonder if it is worth it given the age and value of the machine.
