Absolutely don't pass on the file, you get it printed and post it to them. If they refuse then assume they were going to do something dodgy with the file.

People buy our prints and scan them to resell, giving out a file is making it too easy for them.

The guy who asked could be genuine and probably is but you wouldn't know what kind of online service with the cheapest prices he'd submit the file to and they could do whatever with it etc.

    It's a lovely picture

    You are too nice.

I think his opening comment sums it up
"I could get it printed myself and put you something towards your costs if that works"

Sell him the file for at least €300, it's your creation so you pick your price.

I have shot professionally for over 30 years and when I hear someone say " I have a good eye and I could buy a camera for that (price) "

My reply is "sure off you go and do it"

the whole story wasn't there when I replied first, neck on him like a jockeys bollocks.

    Brilliant,

Just thinking George, the fact that they are going to hang it in the sanctuary of a bedroom and all the wonder exposure you would get, would you not get it printed, framed, deliver it and hang it for them for free.

Maybe through in a camera for them too. Shame to see that great eye wasted.

Recently had a couple that spent over half a million renovating their new house and they were commenting on the images we had on display at a local festival. He loved one we took of their house on the estuary. We said it would make a great center piece framed. he said "sure i got the one you had on facebook and have it as my screen saver"

I did laugh. People never cease to amaze.
    Great shot BTW.

That's ridiculous. You definitely weren't too cheap. I'm looking at a few online now and they're €40 for regular size, 8 x 10 or something. For poster size it should definitely be more. He just belongs to the group of people who don't value art works / photos, they genuinely believe you just point and shoot so really you shouldn't be paid for that!

:-D Agree with the above for the most part but also I must commend you for the way you dealt with him. Firm, but professional and pleasant. Maybe if he does take you up on your offer he'll have a better appreciation for what it takes.

Is it possible to block him from your flickr account?
I would be very surprised if they haven't already helped themselves to the full res file!
(why do you have the high res files publicly available?)

I had a low res file on a local facebook page, so he won't be able to d/load it from there.

That was my plan get him up at the crack of dawn hike a few miles and then sit and wait for a sunrise that won't appear repeat 2 to 3 times and then he might see the efforts us light chasers go to to get the shot!

I'm not trying to give you a hard time here, just pointing out how easy it would be for this individual to get your full res image:
    Google: "george o'mahony photo"
Fifth result on page one of the results.
Fourth image on first page of your flickr

I'm a big believer in protecting yourself by not making high res files freely available online, particularly if you (as you should) see great economic value in your skill set.

    Nice work by the way!!!

Hi George, yep I can download a hi res copy of that photo if I wanted to from flickr (4867x3638) and just crop out the watermark. You can adjust your settings in flickr to prevent that. Just go to settings, privacy and permissions and change the who can download your images to just you.

I'll have to sort that Tony. Thanks

Too late. We got them ALL!! (Cue maniacal laugh).

    I'd be inclined to say:

"With respect, you should know that this shot was :

-taken with upwards of €3000 worth of gear - (body, lens, filters, tripod etc)
-shot in manual and raw, precisely focussed at its hyperlocal length to ensure sharpness from my feet to the horizon, with ND filters to allow a super long exposure
-processed with software which took effort and a long time to master
-captured after five visits to this same spot at 4am in the morning with a two hour wait on the morning the light actually played ball.

It deserves to be properly printed. And it deserves a price which reflects the skill, effort, time and cost it took to capture it."

or else you could try to find out what his profession is and ask for his time at lower than cost price.

I never understand the neck on some people asking for photos for either free or cheap.
    Even corporations do this.

Good man George! Just had a look there and yes it's disabled ;)

Unfortunately it is still possible to get the image:(
When you select the large size image and try to download it does not work but if you right click and Save Page As you get all the information including the high res image :(

Hmm, looks like the only way around it is to upload low res images from the start.

Only way is to upload low res and hate put an embossed watermark around the middle. B*stards will try anything to get the picture. It's also the reason why I only share from flickr to facebook to stop the downloads. As for the price thats very good and unfortunately people don't want to pay and its worse when it's locals. I'd recommend you do a reverse lookup on your pictures every so often using google

I was able to go into Lightroom and change my preset setting for the Flickr plug-in and it's now reloading my images in low res format..:)
