Exchange of licence (UK to Irish)

Finally getting around to starting this process ahead of any potential Brexit complications, from the old Paper UK licence (decades left on it :D ) to Irish.

The process I get. However, it's the 2-3 month bit where I won't have a hard copy driving licence.

Do you get a receipt of something that gets you around the whole having to carry your licence "at all times" part of our road traffic laws? I'd hope my driving would be of a standard I won't get pulled for an offence, but I have been asked to produce it checkpoints before?

They give you a receipt and a scan of your UK licence.

The amount of time it takes depends on how quickly the issuing licence authority responds. The DVLA in UK seem to be quite quick, my wife and I have both exchanged UK licences this year and each took around 3 weeks.

Have to get the Doctor's form done as well to retain all my categories, so that's my first step really!

You'll get BE and C1+E on your Irish licence, but not D1 - something to do with the length or weight restrictions being different, although I couldn't see any difference when I looked them up! Also, note that the expiry on the group 2 categories is 5 years rather than the normal 10.
