There have been so many points I have considered buying these and then not. Are they an actual alternative to normal bulbs (ie bright enough to light a room well).

They're brilliant, but an expensive addiction once you start...

    *oh just one more bulb.....*

See I recenetly got a philips TV with Ambilight - which I really love. Apparently Hue can tune into that.

Yup. I have an ambilight too & hue can be controlled by it, I found it too distracting though. I love the ambilight on the wall behing the TV, but the whole room doing the colour change thing was very distracting.

I'm going to try a single lamp behind the TV directly between the two ambilight strips to see if that works better (stronger light)

Amazon are doing the deal too on the twin packs of E14s and the white gu10s.

I only need three e14s though not six. Argos is telling me it’s out of stock for home delivery on the single colour e14s.

If your happy with your current light levels then check the equivalent lumens for LED if you're using 100w bulbs these won't be bright enough e.g.

    led-lumens-to-watts-conversion-chart.png

The hue bulbs are 800 lumen which is '60w equivalent' but its more complicated than that. Incandescent bulbs typically produce a lot more red wavelength light than LED which gives them their characteristic warmth but the eye is relatively insensitive to those wavelengths so 800lumens of LED may seem a lot brighter than 60w incandescent.

In the case of the ambience bulbs its 800lumen at a 'cold' 4000k so it will appear brighter than a 60w bulb but the light will be clinical compared to incandescent. At a warm 2700k they will appear similar or less than bright than a 60w bulb.

The link on Amazon if anyone's looking

Tbh if you bought 6 you could sell the other 3 and make money back. That said you'll always find a use for them.

Just FYI for anyone trying it, that code has expired, must have been a stock limited offer as it went very quickly.

In my case I have a poorly lit home office/spare bedroom so I'm putting a few E27s in. Have a more stimulating white when I'm working in the evenings and then a softer white if the room is being used for anything else.

Ordered this from Amazon earlier as others said it's fine for the Philips Hue E27's (although I suspect all lights are fine for the E27s, it's the GU10s you have to be careful with)

I'll get a couple of cheap Ikea E27 desk lamps also....

I have a spare Amazon Dot so looking forward to trying the "Alexa, Office lights 50%" (or whatever the command is)

Do you need the IKEA gateway to get them to link up with Hue?

Be aware that the Hue compatibility is relatively recent and was enabled via a firmware update on older bulbs. The firmware update can only be done if you have the IKEA gateway hub. So in this interim period it is a bit of a lottery as to whether an individual IKEA bulb will have the firmware to connect directly to Hue. I read somewhere you can tell from the QR code on the box but I can't find that info now. In general integrating IKEA into Hue looks a little messy at the moment.
