Citroen c4 anti-pollution fault

This is driving me mad. Had it looked at at the start of the summer. They reset it using their computer in my local garage. From time to time since then it has appeared but I have been able to drive while the light was on.

Yesterday the car just died when parked in the Stillorgan shopping centre just as I was about to exit. Sat for about 30 minutes trying to start car during this time. Wouldn't start. Left the car and went to my local garage who was supposed to have cleared this at the start of the summer. They couldn't spare anyone to come and reset it.

About an hour later I went back to car to give it another go at starting. On the second go it started and I managed to drive it home. This morning light still on.

When looking at the car last summer they suggested that it might have been a problem with the coils. They said that one seemed faulty but that you can only replace the 4 of them at the same time as they come in a pack. (I have no idea of the cost of these or labour cost?)

From reading the various forums it appears that this fault could be anything. I don't want to go to the trouble of replacing the coils to find that it is something else.

I really like my car and I would like to keep it. It is a 2005 model and at the moment only has scrappage value so I am reluctant to spend big money on this. At the same time I cannot have this intermittent fault disabling my car and leaving me stranded.

Anyone else in a similar situation.

I don't have experience with particular issues like this, but it may be worth getting the Peugeot/Citroen Diagbox software and cables (previously "Lexia" for Citroens) so you can see what exact faults are being logged, and also get live data when running the engine. You can get them on eBay, and will need a Windows laptop to run the software.

(I actually have the kit if anyone's interested, no use to me any more as I sold my Peugeot)

Disconnect the battery for a few minutes then off you go, had the same problem with a C5 and happened twice then no problems. Lashed a load of dipetane into the tank too

Thanks. I am going to try disconnecting the battery. Can this Dipetane be purchased in Halfords or similar. Do I just put a cup full in the tank?

My garage ran a diagnostic test and said the problem appeared to be with the coils. Are the "coils" the old spark plugs?

Dipetane is for cleaning fuel injectors and such.
It won't hurt though and you find it in Halfords or local motor factors. I usually put a half bottle in with a full tank petrol.

the amount of Dipetane used is based on the amount of fuel in your tank so when filling up at the forecourt just follow the instructions on the bottle.

Car finally gave up the ghost. I was told after a €50 diagnostic from Gowan that it was most likely a fuse box problem. When pushed they also said it might be a coils problem. Nobody seemed sure.
Decided to get rid of it in the end and purchase a new car.
