    Not exactly specialist work ,
any mechanic could look at it and fix it.

If the handle is loose then most likely the rod from the lock to the handle has either broken or become detached. It’s not a specialist job and any half competent mechanic should be able to fix or replace it.

Is it the interior handle? you could have a look yourself by removing the door card - as it's been suggested, most likely the wire/rod has simply got detached. It's a quick, 10 minutes DIY fix in that case :)

Back from the garage and it’s looking like a new lock has to be put in.Sorry for all the questioning but would this be very expensive ??
Thanks for all the help so far

Same thing happened to my 08 A4. Handles wouldn't work on the inside or outside. Local mechanic couldn't get it open even. In the end I took to Kevin O'Leary in Cork who had to order a new lock. It was something around €250 all in. Same thing happened to two more locks in car before an NCT as well. Failed naturally enough. Ended up replacing those two as well. So an expensive fix but worth it cos the engine is bullet proof (at least for me):D

Also happened to 2 doors on my 08 A4 which required 2 new locks

around 200euro supplied and fitted by George Dalton on here. (per lock)

    Seems to be a common enough issue on Audi's / VW's .
