Ok, I was going to make the suggestion to buy an IS with the supercharger work already done. Pretty sure I saw a few with the TTE kit on donedeal in the last few months

dont suppose any of them were for breaking ha

No I don't, but I think the TTE kit is the way to go, it's all pre-done so it's just a matter of assembling it on the car. It will make your car even less insurable than it is now though.

i seen that on ebay for like 2500 sterling its a bit much a supercharger out of a merc will go in it but i cant get my hands on the cradle that holds the supercharger id do it myself if i could get one

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

What are you going to do with the ECU.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14 dar37

There is some black box u can get or a hks thing I have a list there of stuff to get but no point getting it all if i can't get the cradle that is why i was looking for someone else to do it for me that might be able to make a cradle I have heard they can be copied

Is the is200 hard to insure?

Wow, lots of smart comments for a thread about someone wanting to modify their car for a motors forum?

To the OP, try TDP, they might be able to either do the job or point you in the right direction.

But on a serious note, if there is a kit available for 2.5k sterling then buy that you are dreaming if you think you will get it done cheaper than that

Crap so I may as well just get the tte one off eBay and do it myself

OP, I'm guessing the car was c. €3,000 or less to buy? You want to fork out a massive amount of money ($3,250 from what I see on ebay for a TTE kit) to supercharge it etc. Are you going to declare the supercharging modification to your insurance company? If it was expensive to insure as standard I don't want to think how much it would be with a supercharger.

If the car is involved in an accident and they find it was supercharged and not declared, your insurance will be null and void.

This feels like a wind-up (no pun intended)..........

I'd be more concerned about the small hp increase. you'd be lucky to get 200 with the supercharger and Irish fuel, just not worth it

As usual most of the thread is made up of the usual d1ckish responses but hey that's what ya get OP for being a dirty scumbag who probably carries out the genocidal act of spinning your rear tyres every so often...

They handle pretty well all told. Well balanced and predictable. Factory suspension is a bit soft but a good set of springs or coilovers transforms them on track and/or good roads.

Carthrottle did an interesting feature on a budget trackday is200 a while back. It makes for decent viewing.

Anyways regarding the op unless you get a complete supercharger kit in good condition for a decent price it's going to be an expensive venture. Maybe try some of the Toyota fb pages? Or toc irl if there's still any activity on it.

The proper tte supercharger kit and maybe try to diy it would be the cheapest way to go about things.
I couldn't comment on who to go to around Dublin but I suppose asking around the by word of mouth would be the best approach. There's a mechanic on toc irl who goes by the name of bimotoman he's up around Dublin as far as I know and he'd probably be willing to do it. Knows his way around most things Toyota going by all accounts.

A side from that a turbo setup would be another option especially in a piece it together homemade sorta fashion and it'd bring better power yields but as far as I know 250bhp is pretty much the limit and at that you'd need excellent stand alone management and a good tune both of which are pricey. And a few decades of the rosary for your rods.

Option 3 is an engine swap. It will yield the most power and if done right it'd be the most reliable setup.

    1uzfe preferably a gen1 non vvti.

1jz (best swap by a mile but also the dearest)

2jzge outta a gs300. The gen1 of which has the same rods as the 2jzgte but they're hard find, early model gs300 or sc300 being your best bet. the gen2's have lighter rods and vvti but they were actually used in the is300 so it's a very doable swap. Many parts can be used from the gs300 and some is300 parts. 220bhp but plenty of options to turbo it further on down the road but money would be the issue.

Sr20det has been done plenty before too.

Icetronix would probably do any of the above as mentioned but I'd imagine they'd be very dear it'd be a drive in drive out service though.

Give toc irl a try and you'll surely get sorted or at least pointed in the right direction.

On the Insurance side of things I couldn't comment but then again it was never asked about perhaps when a thread appears in the insurance forum the op could be best advised...

No no 'supercharging' is a motoring term from long long before people started driving electrofied cars.

    OP
I know a guy in Dublin that is big into these projects. He may be able to offer some advice. I know he had a big power project going on a while back but sold it off.
Are you on facebook? I could point you in his direction.
    Message me if you wish.

A lad on arsebook offers the full conversion for IS200s to run the 1UZ-FE for €1600 (I thinks) which includes wiring and adapters to the gearbox.

It might be worthwhile sourcing an LS400 and swapping across what's needed with the help of the aforementioned

Has the IS got an LSD?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,055 ✭✭✭selectamatic

Just on the 1uz swap the standard is200 box will handle everyday driving and some spirited runs too but if any drifting, hard launching etc is planned it probably wont last too long. It's a decent box I thinks it's used in Silvia's and Mazda rx8's too aling with others and it'll handle decent bhp and torque numbers well up in the rev range but it's the low down grunt of a v8 that's very hard on gearboxes.

There's a couple of options available for different boxes but again if it's not diy it'll be costly
