Importing a UK car using primary medical cert

    Hi,

Has anyone who has a primary medical cert imported a new Uk car? Can you tell me what the process is? I know it would be VRT exempt but it is possible to somehow reclaim the UK VAT using the primary medical cert?
I understand no Irish VAT would be paid on the car but essentially it's the same difference I.e instead of revenue sending the VAT cheque to me they would send it to UK government? Or does it not work this way?
I would really appreciate it if someone could inform me. Thanks

I'm not sure but think you'd have to buy a vat qualifying car, i.e. Probably a 2017 ex demo or hire drive that the dealer can sell car free for export using your pps number as the vat number.

Best of my knowledge you can not claim the uk VAT. I have brought in 2 cars, but not in four years.

Cheers for the reply. I found out from revenue that I can't claim back vat BUT someone informed me I could claim back UK VAT through the V411 form. Have you ever heard of this form?

Sorry but most of that message went right over my head 🙈 What exactly is a Vat qualifying car?

I'm not sure why some cars are vat qualifying or not but they appear to cars less than a year old but sometimes older. On auto trader ads you see cars marked as vat qualifying. In simple terms I believe (but might be wrong) that you can only claim vat back on vat qualifying cars

No, but it's a few years since I brought in a car.....any update on your investigations?

The dealer I was speaking to said I don't have to pay VAT or VRT on a new car since I would be exporting it out of the Uk and when I import it into ireland I wouldn't have to pay tax either cos I have a primary cert. Either way you can 100% claim Vat and Vrt on a new car that you are exporting out of the Uk. Obviously it's less hassle to just buy it without VAT and VRT in the first place.

    Hi there,

I ended up buying a car here off my local garage. But I did enquire about buying a new BMW and they were happy to knock the VAT off the car before purchase price. I’m not sure if this only applies to a new car or not. You don’t even need a primary care cert for this. Anyone who is exporting a brand new car from the UK to Ireland can claim VAT back. But they should be able to knock it off the purchase price without any hassle. Again I don’t know if this applies to second hand cars. Are you looking to buy a new or second hand car? The process is a little more complicated for buying a car in the UK but totally worth it IMO. Cars are much cheaper there now with sterling being so weak against the euro. I would have travelled over there myself but can’t due to a chronic illness. What sort of car are you going for?

    First thing to check is.
Is the car suitable to disabled conversions.
Volvos tend to be a problem. My Volvo 60s was not suitable for conversion.
Check with you local approved converter before you buy.

7.2 Application For Remission of VRT and VAT RepaymentNew/Imported VehicleOn receipt of completed Application Form (DD1), a Letter of Authorisation (LOA) will be issued. Enter Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) details on LOA. An Exemption Notification will then issue which permits the vehicle to be registered exempt of VRT, subject to the relevant limits and provided it is a qualifying vehicle under the Scheme. The claim will be processed on receipt of invoices and Individual Vehicle Approval (IVA) certificate (where required - available from authorised dealer/conversion specialist). In case of an imported vehicle, where the vehicle is liable to VAT at registration, the Central Repayments Office will process a repayment of that VAT, if applicable. A person who is already availing of the Scheme will not receive an LOA when changing vehicle. VIN details should be entered on Application Form (DD1).Used VehiclesOn receipt of completed Application Form (DD1) and the paid invoices in respect of the purchase and the adaptation of the vehicle, the claim will be processed. The majority of used/second hand vehicles purchased from a garage are purchased under the “Margin Scheme“. This means that no VAT is payable when the vehicle is purchased and accordingly no VAT is refundable in these instances. The invoice for the purchase of the vehicle will state “Margin Scheme”.The onus is on the applicant to ensure that all documents are forwarded to the Central Repayments Office. https://www.ddai.ie/images/publications/taxreliefscheme.pdf

    I hope this helps
