I suppose you could do it anytime. Would it be of value to you, outside of the tax issue? Help with bank loans etc? Do you need it, if leasing land, where the other party wants tax relief?

I asked this to Pallaskenry recently. Worth doing if you want to be a trained farmer (because they say trained farmers will earn more), also under 40 it will qualify you for most schemes. For claiming back after land transfer you can do it before or after the transfer, but it must be within 4 years to claim back stamp duty

So long as you were under 35 at date of transfer.

So long as there is blood coarsing through your veins and you have the strength to write a cheque in the order of €2500-3000 made payable to Teagasc, you can do it any hour of your life!

Is it worth my while doing the green cert?

Hi all...just looking for your opinions about whether or not its worthwhile doing the green cert. I just got a letter from Mount Bellew Ag college about it and they are having an open evening later this month with the course commencing in late November, one day a month for 24 months.

    My circumstances are:
-have science degree, working full time in the west of Ireland.
    - the homefarm is being run now by older brother and my father is retired from farming more or less, and is all signed over to the brother.
    - keen interest in farming but im too used to the pay cheque every week from the day job and wouldnt be interested in full time farming.

I dont think I'd see myself buying land in the medium term as I bought a house not too long ago so thats gobbling up any spare cash. I've no cattle or sheep of my own.

Im leaning toward doing a part time postgrad engineering course which would help me progress careerwise. Any thoughts appreciated. Thanks

Why were you looking to do the green cert in the first place?

Good question! Been asking myself that today too... and I'm doubting whether its worth my while doing it..I guess my thinking was that it would come in useful at some stage if I qualified as young farmer, maybe with regard to grants etc for new sheds...but also it would be maybe bringing another perspective into the running of the home farm.. two heads are better than one eh!
