Kia Ray EV - European launch?

For those who don't know, Kia sold a kei-style car in Korea called the Ray in limited numbers.

In 2011/2012 it was the Kia brand's first production BEV, initially offered with a 16.4kWh battery and a 50kW motor. It's also offered with a 57kW petrol or LPG powertrain.

Well the Ray is getting a refresh and along with an updated powertrain (it may be SK Innovation providing the battery rather than LG Chem) it may be heading to europe. Crash safety and DRLs to meet EU standards are part of the refresh.
Although part of the impetus is domestic demand for EVs (EV sales in Korea are 369% of the same period last year, led by strong sales of the Ioniq), firstly an SK Innovation batteried EV would add a little diversity in suppliers (while the Kia Soul EV uses SK Innovation too most Hyundai/Kia EV volume is using LG Chem cells) and secondly the additional volume should help margins on the Ray.

    Here's the original Ray EV:

And a RAY EV Taxi concept from 2013:

Well in fairness they have the Stonic EV (their badge of the Hyundai Kona) on the way too along with the Niro EV.
The higher-ups in Hyundai/Kia are very quickly coming around to the idea that there might be money in this EV thing after all.

I think the Ray is pretty cool. The pillarless sliding door on one side and the extra interior space vs a similar kei-style mini-CUV in particular.

It's cool no doubt, I love all those kei cars or kei style cars. (eg the nissan cube ICE).
I just feel that it isn't really conducive to getting the most range possible.

They are thinking about the school runs and the trip to Tesco. Motorway driving much less so.

The backseat looks more like a seat from a subway rather than a nice comfy taxi seat. They look like hard plastic... puke proof anyway I suppose which is important for a taxi in this country! :)

It also looks like it would only take 2 passengers, maybe 3 at a squeeze?

Not sure it would be popular in Europe as a taxi unless the design changed.

They're wasting their time bringing that to Europe. It's seriously ugly.

It's still the biggest selling EV in Ireland partly because it's not fugly. While it (Leaf) takes a bit of getting used to, the award for most ugly EV on sale here has to go to the i3... ice cream freezer with wheels. Ioniq is no looker either, though possibly the best of a bad lot.

In the jammed city the aerodynamic drag is irrelevant, but parking space at premium. Low footprint, highish volume... I love it.
