    Bought some activated carbon online
    is it normal to be really dirty, not inclined to put this in the filter

    It always needs a rinse before you use it. Fill the net and rinse it under the cold tap. Give it a final swirl in the waste water when you're doing a water change and *then* add it to your filter.

    This stuff is running completely black no matter how much I rinse it
