Just saw that independent.ie has disabled comments on stories permanently.

    Blaming Irish libel laws.

Truth is they were so annoying and stupid with the same core group of fools that it meant that it brought their low standards even lower.

Good riddance to the comments section.

They claim it is due to Ireland's "draconian libel laws".

Not an expert in libel, assume this means that INM are responsible for the comments posted and can be sued if something is determined to be libelous.

I don't think this is something to be celebrated, will other news organisations follow suit?

I know what you are saying about the same group of people commenting all the time, that happens on every website that allows comments and is unavoidable.

Didn’t RTÉ disable theirs years ago?

Probably a costs cutting exercise. Must have been expensive to outsource all those comments to some call centre in the back of beyonds.

It'ss still a removal of a reasonably free speech forum which can't be good. It also probably reflected the views of many Irish people that don't necessarily get reflected by the media on topical issues.

IT still has comments doesn't it? Be interesting to see if they close up shop. Mind you if INM are citing libel laws where does that leave politics.ie, journal.ie. broadsheet.ie or indeed boards.ie?

    " Independent.ie Comments Facility

INM has taken the decision to remove the commenting facility on its online platform Independent.ie to minimise the legal risk to our business that arises from Ireland's draconian libel awards system.

We continue to look forward to receiving comments through direct email contact or via social media, some of which may still be featured on the website Independent.ie"

It does, and its quite good.

Thankfully they require you to be a subscriber and in most cases use your real name.

Cuts out almost all the dross.

I think a lot of comments posted were critical of the quality of the piece of itself, that would surely have rubbed them up the wrong.

Facebook doesn't seem to be libel for anything people post on there so not sure why the Indo site would be any different.

i know someone who had a letter published in the indo.a person made a comment which claimed she had said something she hadn't because he disagreed with her main point. that is all the comments were - people who did not have the courage to write a letter to the editor making a point and giving their name hiding behind a keyboard the sameas anonymous letter writers
