Hi, so my current job is possibly coming to an end. The company are closing some offices and I am thinking rather than relocating maybe its time for a career change. I am im my mid 30s and thinking of hotel jobs. I worked in the industry years ago and loved the face paced, customer aspect side of the job. However I am older now and circumstances have changed with regard to being able to work all hours of the day and night etc. Family time etc etc
But what is working in a hotel like these days. I am thinking of doing a course with cmit in event management as I would love this. Also reception work I'd love, that side of things this time. How hard is it to get work these days in it?? Any info would be great.....

You have to REALLY like that sort of job to make a career out of it, imo. The hours are long, the work is often hard and there will always be someone complaining that things are not done well enough/fast enough/the way they want it done - and that's just from other staff! You also have the guests to deal with. Hotel reception work is also shift work, you could be working until around 11pm on a late shift. There are almost no customer-facing jobs in a hotel that have regular hours. Having worked in various jobs in hotels over the years, I would not be keen to go back there.

But that's just me. Why not see if you can pick up a few shifts helping out serving at weddings? (not sure if hotels still employ casual staff for this?) While doing that, maybe speak to the duty manager or event manager in charge of the wedding/event and get some first hand experiences.

Thanks for that, that's a good idea. The night part of shift work wouldn't bother me as I work until 02.00 as it is.....that busy fast paced work I love. I worked in customer services / complaints for a few years in retail and thrived on it.....
Thanks for your reply, def going to try get casual work and see Can I meet up with duty manager too
