I have an old laptop lying around. Its a Sony Vaio (sve112m1ew). Specs are as follows: AMD E2-1800, 4 GB, 320GB hard drive, currently Win8.1. I've never in my life used Linux, but would like to learn.

So two questions, first, is this hardware alright to run it and secondly, what version of Linux would be best to start off on for a beginner?

    Thanks in advance.

This tool will put the .iso you download onto a USB drive for you :

( this will erase everything on the USB drive !!! )

Once you realise you are using older hardware and do not expect super performance on it you should have a good experience.

Remember Linux is not Windows so things are done differently.
The Windows way is not the 'right' way, just different.

I would suggest either Mint or PClinuxOS

which has a very helpful forum for new users.

The KDE desktop is the more popular in PCLSO

IMO you should try both of those running from LiveDVD/LiveUSB before deciding on which you would install.

Underneath the bling most Linux releases are very similar.

Good luck with your journey ;)

Anything Ubuntu based would be my suggestion to start off with. A personal favourite of mine is Ubuntu MATE:

Nice retro functional desktop environment that's light on system resources.

    Enjoy the Linux experience! :)
